Main Purpose & Function

The Structures team is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to manage its asset portfolio, including 45 bridges, 500 retaining walls, and other structures. This role involves working with the Structures Section Head and leading a team of engineers and support staff on asset management strategies, capital planning, emergency response, and more. The Senior Structural Engineer may also oversee small construction projects related to the portfolio.

This position reports to the Structures Section Head and supervises a small team. It collaborates with various City departments and external stakeholders.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop and manage asset management plans and programs for bridges, seawalls, retaining walls, and slopes.
  • Manage asset inspections, condition monitoring, and reporting.
  • Develop and oversee capital maintenance and rehabilitation programs.
  • Coordinate with Street Operations and external consultants for inspections, assessments, and repairs.
  • Support emergency management plans and participate in training and exercises.
  • Assist in capital planning and budget management.
  • Provide technical leadership in structural engineering standards and reviews.
  • Oversee external design projects and reviews, act as Engineer of Record as needed.
  • Participate in committees, stakeholder engagement, and inter-departmental collaborations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering, PE designation, and at least 8 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience managing teams and projects.
  • Registration or eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer in BC.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of structural design, construction, and inspection practices.
  • Familiarity with municipal codes, standards, and emergency planning.
  • Strong project management, leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to develop relationships and influence stakeholders.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.

This role is eligible for the City of Vancouver's Flexible Work Program, allowing remote work 1-4 days per week.

Start Date: June 2025

Salary: $111,139 to $138,924 per annum (Pay Grade RNG-091)
