Job description

CIVIL CONSTRUCTION SUPERINTENDENT
Build the Work. Lead the Team.

Some people manage construction from a distance. You'll rather be where the work is happening.

As a Civil Construction Superintendent with MacKay Contracting, you'll lead the field execution of challenging heavy civil projects and help turn plans, people, equipment, and materials into finished work you can be proud of.

You'll have the authority to lead your site, the support of an experienced project team, and access to the people, equipment, and resources needed to get the job done right.

What You'll Get to Build

Our civil projects can include:

  • Major earthworks and site development
  • Road and highway construction
  • Underground utilities and infrastructure
  • Bridges, culverts, and drainage works
  • Commercial and industrial site development
  • Environmental and water management projects
  • Complex infrastructure projects in challenging terrain and conditions

This is a role for someone who enjoys seeing a project take shape in front of them and knows that good field leadership can make the difference between simply completing a job and delivering it exceptionally well.

What You'll Get to Lead
Turn the plan into production.

Take ownership of field execution and keep crews, equipment, subcontractors, materials, and project priorities moving in the same direction.

Build a crew that performs.

Set clear expectations, develop your foremen and crews, recognize strong performance, and create a site where people know what needs to happen and take pride in making it happen.

Stay ahead of the work.

Look beyond today's production. Anticipate constraints, coordinate upcoming activities, identify problems early, and make decisions before small issues become expensive ones.

Create safe, well-planned jobsites.

Safety isn't paperwork added to the work. It starts with how the work is planned, communicated, organized, and led every day.

Drive production without sacrificing quality.

Understand the schedule, quantities, equipment, manpower, and production targets behind the project and continually look for better ways to execute the work.

Connect the field and project team.

Work closely with Project Managers, Foremen, Survey, Engineering, Safety, Equipment, subcontractors, and clients so the people building the project have the information and support they need.

Finish strong.

Keep quality, deficiencies, documentation, commissioning, and closeout moving alongside production so the last 10% of the project receives the same attention as the first 90%.

You'll Probably Fit Here If

You've spent enough time in heavy civil construction to understand how work actually gets built, not just how it looks on a schedule.

You can look at a set of drawings, walk a jobsite, talk with your foremen, and quickly understand what needs to happen next.

You're comfortable making decisions when conditions change.

You know when to push production and when slowing down for ten minutes will save ten hours later.

You earn respect by knowing the work, communicating clearly, and holding yourself to the same standard you expect from your crew.

And when something goes wrong, you're interested in solving the problem rather than finding someone to blame.

Your background will ideally include:

  • Significant field experience in heavy civil construction
  • Previous experience leading crews, foremen, and subcontractors
  • Strong understanding of earthworks, grading, underground utilities, roadbuilding, or similar civil construction
  • Ability to read and understand drawings, specifications, schedules, and project requirements
  • Experience planning manpower, equipment, materials, and upcoming work
  • Strong understanding of construction safety and quality requirements
  • The ability to communicate effectively with both field personnel and project management
Even Better If You Bring

Experience delivering larger or technically challenging civil infrastructure projects, particularly involving major earthworks, highways, utilities, structures, industrial construction, or complex site development.

Experience with GPS machine control, digital construction tools, survey technology, production tracking, and modern project management systems is also an asset.

What You'll Get From MacKay

You won't be expected to build complicated projects without support.

You'll work alongside experienced Project Managers, Foremen, Survey, Engineering, Safety, Equipment, and project support personnel who understand heavy civil construction.

You'll also have access to a large, modern heavy equipment fleet and the resources of a contractor that has spent decades taking on challenging infrastructure work.

Most importantly, you'll have an opportunity to lead work that is worth building.

Roads. Infrastructure. Industrial sites. Environmental projects. Complex earthworks.

Projects you can drive past years later and say:

We built that.
