Job summary

MacKay Contracting Ltd. is seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator based in Cranbrook, BC to support civil construction and mining projects.

You will operate grader and other equipment, follow safety standards, and collaborate with a team. Overtime may be required; strong communication and a valid driver’s license are essential.

Qualifications

• Experienced in civil construction or grader operation.
• Knowledge of construction layout and staking.
• 3D machine control experience is an asset.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen.
• Valid government photo ID and clean driver's abstract.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain multiple pieces of equipment safely.
• Work in a team to operate excavators, loader, dozer, grader, and haul truck.
• Perform safety hazard assessments and follow safety practices.
• Complete daily logs, FLHAs, and timecards.
• Be flexible with hours to support project needs.

This role is based out of our Cranbrook headquarters office, located at 1600A Theatre Rd., Cranbrook, BC. Shifts typically run Monday through Friday, starting at 7:00 a.m., with 8 to 12 hour days. Overtime is paid after eight (8) hours. Occasional weekend work may be required but is not expected to make up a major component of the role.

How you will get to contribute

• Perform work in accordance with all organizational, provincial, and federal health and safety standards and legislation, ensuring the highest standard of safety is upheld.
• Work within a team to effectively and safely operate multiple pieces of equipment such as excavators, loader, dozer, grader, and haul truck.
• Operate in crowded, fast-paced working environments, exercising extreme caution and awareness of potential situational hazards to ensure site safety.
• Interpret verbal and non-verbal communication, including hand signals, from operators, ground personnel, and labourers, and act accordingly.
• Perform mechanical inspections and servicing, including controls and operations, completing logbooks, minor maintenance and adjustments, housekeeping, and machine lubrication within your skillset.
• Track daily cleaning at the end of shift.
• Recognize existing and potential hazards by conducting a field-level hazard analysis, checking for hazards, and assessing tasks.
• Be flexible with hours and willing to support project needs.
• Adhere to all MacKay safety practices and policies.
• Operate equipment while maintaining proper awareness of surroundings.
• Complete and submit daily FLHAs.
• Complete and submit daily timecards.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Who you are

• Experienced in civil construction or equivalent experience on a grader.
• Knowledgeable in construction layout and staking.
• Experience with 3D machine control is considered an asset.
• Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
• A strong communicator with active listening skills, able to take and follow instructions while operating safely.
• In possession of a valid form of government-issued photo identification.
• Able to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
• In possession of a valid and clean driver's abstract.
