The City of Watonga, Oklahoma, operates under the Council-Manager form of government and is soliciting applications for the position of City Manager. Watonga is a city in Blaine County, located about 70 miles northwest of Oklahoma City. It is the county seat and was named after Arapaho Chief Wa-ton-gha, meaning Black Coyote. Local attractions include Roman Nose State Park and the Lucky Star Casino. Watonga has a population of 2,617, according to the 2024 census.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the chief executive officer and head of the administrative branch of the city government; execute the laws and administer the government of the city; be responsible to the Mayor and Council.
  • Appoint, and when necessary for the good of the service, remove, demote, lay off or suspend the city attorney, all heads of administrative departments and other administrative officers and employees of the city, as provided by law. The manager or the council by ordinance may authorize the head of a department to appoint and remove subordinates in such department, office or agency.
  • Supervise and control all administrative departments, officers and agencies.
  • Prepare a budget annually and submit it to the council; administer the budget after it goes into effect and recommend changes as desirable.
  • Submit to the council a report after the end of the fiscal year on the finances and administrative activities of the city for the preceding year.
  • Keep the council advised of the financial condition and future needs of the city, and make recommendations as deemed desirable.
  • Perform such other duties as may be prescribed by law or by ordinance.
  • Serve as the Trust Manager for the Watonga Public Works Authority and Watonga Economic Development Authority.
Qualifications

Watonga desires candidates to have a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Finance or a closely related field, and five (5) years of experience in public administration including three (3) years at a Department Head or Division Manager level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
