Nova Scotia Health seeks a Chronic Pain Management Physician to join the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney. The role centers on chronic pain care with potential anesthesia duties in ORs and clinics, plus on-call responsibilities.

The NSH Pain Management Services unit in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital will be the primary workplace. The successful candidate will engage in interventional pain procedures, opioid management, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to deliver

Qualifications

• Eligible for RCPSC certification with sub-specialty pain medicine training (e.g., FRCPC Pain Medicine or US board).
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with emphasis on patient safety and quality.
• Experience in a complex health sciences centre; interest in pain research; ASRA or equivalent pain ultrasound certification.
• Preference given to Physiatry, Neurology or Psychiatry backgrounds or interest in pain research.

Responsibilities

• Deliver full scope of chronic pain management, including opioid management and interventional therapies.
• Collaborate with allied health professionals for comprehensive patient care.
• Participate in patient safety and quality improvement activities and rounds.
• Contribute to department research activities as negotiated annually.
• Engage in departmental administration via meetings and committees.
• Provide clear communications to patients and families for care planning.
• Foster positive, respectful relationships with students, residents and staff.

The Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Department of Anesthesia, Pain Management and Perioperative Medicine is seeking a Chronic Pain Management Physician to join our team in Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia to work within the Eastern Zone of Nova Scotia Health.

The Department provides a full spectrum of specialty anesthesia care to patients in Eastern Zone, and administers leading edge programs in perioperative medicine, perioperative blood management, and pain management.

The Cape Breton Pain Clinic is an outpatient clinic that with the referral of a healthcare provider provides assessments, treatments and education to persons living with chronic pain.

Job Description

This position will be primarily focused on chronic pain management, and if the successful candidate is an anesthesiologist, they will also deliver anesthesia care in the ORs and the clinics and while on-call. The position will work primarily with NSH Pain Management Services located at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

Responsibilities

• Effectively and safely deliver the full scope of sub-specialty chronic pain management care to patients, including chronic opioid management, non-opioid pharmacologic treatment as well as interventional procedures with ultrasound and fluoroscopy.
• Participate in collaborative chronic pain assessment and management with allied health professionals.
• Participate in patient safety and quality improvement activities and rounds.
• Contribute to the research activities of the Department, the details of which will be negotiated with the Department Head or designate on an annual basis and will depend on the needs of the Department.
• Participate actively in departmental administration through involvement in departmental meetings and committees.
• Provide effective communications to patients and their families, engaging them in their care planning and decisions.
• Foster positive, respectful and collaborative relationships with students, residents and clinical and administrative colleagues.
• Permanent Full-Time (Part-Time and Locum negotiable)
• Participation in on-call schedules, as required

Remuneration

• Pain services are remunerated at a sessional rate
• Anesthesia services remuneratedFFS at prevailing rates per Physician Agreement
• Compensation will depend on FTE, hours worked and call coverage.

• All specialists must be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) with additional sub-specialty training in pain medicine (e.g., FRCPC Pain Medicine, US Board Certification in Pain Medicine or equivalent).
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a focus on patient safety and quality.
• Strong assets include experience in a complex health sciences centre; experience and interest in pain research; and ASRA or equivalent pain ultrasound certification.
• Preference may be given to those whose base specialty background is Physiatry, Neurology or Psychiatry or those with an interest in pain research.
