Job Description:
ACCOUNTABILITIES
Spiritual Leadership
- Contribute to the spiritual development of children and youth and their families within the church and community by mentoring, discipling, encouraging, and modeling Christ-like attitudes and behaviors.
- Pray with and lead youth and family members to faith in Jesus Christ.
- Follow up with youth and parents/guardians on spiritual decisions made, building and strengthening relationships, and guiding youth in establishing active links with the church and its ministries.
- Demonstrate keen pastoral interest in community outreach. Build relationships with youth and families connected to our Community & Family Services, Day Care, etc. Encourage the volunteer team to do the same.
- Cultivate a “spiritual and relational leadership style” with youth, children, their friends, and their families.
- Work as a key member with the church’s Pastoral Team providing pastoral care and oversight for children & youth ministries.
Children & Youth Programming Oversight
- Attend Sunday worship services and participate fully as a part of the Mississauga Community Church congregation, understanding that Sunday meeting attendance is an essential part of the ministry responsibility.
- Coordinate and maintain (and when necessary, reimagine) existing programming relevant to the youth of the church and community at large, including worship, Bible studies, small groups, fellowship, discipleship, and regular special events.
- Maintain a clear focus on outreach, looking for opportunities to reach out to our communities, providing regular programs and events (e.g., Rally Day, Easter Egg Hunt, Christmas Breakfast, Community events, public school clubs, camps, music school, etc.) that will connect youth and families from our Community Services and surrounding neighborhoods, while fostering intergenerational connections and encouraging further connections to the life of MCC. This will require collaboration with our Outreach Officers as well as a comprehensive follow-up and communication strategy.
- Oversee the development, organization, and mobilization of a comprehensive outreach ministry for our communities, providing regular programs and events that will connect with youth and families from our Community & Family Services ministries.
- Oversee the Youth Music School and work collaboratively to support its leaders and other volunteers. Provide oversight to the Music School Director.
- Promote, support, and participate in Divisional and Territorial Children and Youth events.
- Work cooperatively and consultatively with church leaders to prepare and deliver youth worship services, sermons, and devotionals for the senior corps and youth events.
- Work together with existing fundraising efforts to raise funds and support participation in local (church & community), divisional, and territorial initiatives.
- Commit to personal and professional development in coordination with supervisor (courses, training, workshops, etc.).
Volunteer Coordination & Leadership
- Develop a team of volunteers; recruit, supervise, orient, support, and train volunteer leaders for youth discipleship programs such as Bible studies, youth groups, Music School, etc., in partnership with the Corps Officers and other youth leaders.
- Develop strategies and recommendations for volunteer development.
- Prepare, post, and maintain all volunteer schedules for those supervised, ensuring adequate coverage for all program functions.
- Ensure MCC is compliant with all screening processes for children & youth volunteers, including police checks, statements of applicant for work with children and youth, and online abuse prevention training.
Administration
- Ensure written records and logs of activities, including reports and statistics, are prepared, reported, and maintained.
- Assist in maintaining volunteer files and statistical records as directed.
- Ensure all promotional material for youth programs and services is drafted, designed, and distributed in a timely manner (subject to supervisor approval).
- Participate in developing and implementing policies and procedures for youth programs.
Communication
- Communicate professionally with volunteer teams, congregants, families, and staff.
- Maintain frequent communication with children and parents using various methods (in person, phone, email, social media, website, etc.).
- Demonstrate skill in social media applications (advertising, creating videos, etc.).
- Embrace growing technology needs, post to social media platforms, and develop online communications.
- Inform the Corps Officer of any concerns or issues promptly.
Health and Safety
- Maintain program storage areas in a tidy manner.
- Maintain an up-to-date inventory of equipment and supplies.
- Seek continual education in food safety and health standards, including maintaining Safe Food Handling Certification.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act, regulations, and The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies.
Perform other related duties as required.
Critical Relationship Management:
- Internal relationships: Corps Officers, congregation members, volunteers, staff.
- Attend and participate in church leadership and staff meetings as required.
- Work effectively with local and program leaders.
- External relationships: Local community groups and schools.
MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY:
- This position reports directly to the Corps Officer for Congregational Ministries.
- Collaborate with other MCC Officer Team members and Senior Leadership Team.
- Hold regular volunteer meetings with all children and youth volunteers.
- Supervise 15-20 youth volunteer leaders within established guidelines.
FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
- Maintain current curriculum and program equipment.
- Contribute to youth budget planning and work within the assigned budget.
Working Conditions:
- This is a permanent full-time position, 40 hours per week.
- The environment is primarily office and community settings at three sites.
- Ability to lift/move up to 40 lbs.
- Frequent reaching, bending, stooping; sitting and standing for periods.
- Travel (~10%) for supplies and meetings, using program vehicle when available.
Hours of Work: Flexibility required, including evenings, weekends, and Sundays at Mississauga Community Church.

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Post-secondary degree or college diploma in Children/Youth Ministry or Biblical & Theological Studies.
- Current Safe Food Handlers and First Aid/CPR certifications or willingness to obtain.
Experience and Skills:
- Minimum two years working with youth and youth programs.
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, personal vehicle, insurance, and satisfactory driver’s abstract.
- Second language is an asset.
