Children’s Choir Director

VEMS provides extracurricular music to children in the city of Vancouver. We are a non-profit Society registered in BC with CRA charitable status.

To provide a choral program that is joyful, inclusive, and fun. All children are welcome; there are no auditions. Many students may not have sung in a choir before or read music. The Choir Director’s job is to introduce the joy of singing together to young people.

Responsibilities:

1. Choose repertoire for each term that reflects the school community and is appropriate for the singers (VEMS does have a music library of material that's been "road tested").
2. Prepare sheet music with piano and melody lines for accompanists.
3. Make folders of music for singers.
4. Punctual.
5. Run weekly rehearsals.
6. Take attendance.
7. Take a leadership role in child safety.

Qualifications:

1. A bachelor's degree in music or in the process of acquiring said degree.
2. Must be able to read music.
3. Musical training in voice (Ability to sing in a variety of languages is an asset).
4. Understanding of vocal pedagogy.
5. Experience singing in choir/s, comfortable demonstrating vocally for the choir.
6. Enjoys working with children.
7. Patient, organized, a sense of humour.
8. Good written and verbal communication skills.
9. Criminal background check (Program Director can provide information on how to obtain).
10. Comfortable with MuseScore or Sibelius software is an asset.
