About Us

The Catholic Centre for immigrants (CCI) has been serving refugees and immigrants for more than 65 years. CCI is a bridge between the 7,000 immigrants and refugees who come to Ottawa each year and the community. We provide programs and services to help newcomers settle and integrate. We also work in the community to promote the value of a diverse and more welcoming community for all.

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Manager, the Children's Program Worker will closely collaborate with the Program Coordinator. The primary responsibility is to aid in planning, implementing, and facilitating a program aimed at familiarizing newcomer children (ages 5-17) with the Canadian School System. This includes various educational, enjoyable, and innovative activities. The worker will ensure children’s safety, respect parents and children, and keep the equipment & facilities clean, safe, and in good condition. The worker will support the work with students and volunteers to carry out all program activities and will perform other duties as required by the organization.

This position reports to: Manager
Employment status: 12 Months contract with a possibility of extension

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direction of the Manager, the Children Program Worker will:

  1. Support the development of culturally appropriate programs and activities.
  2. Provide and maintain a safe, secure, and healthy environment.
  3. Help to prepare and organize weekly and monthly schedules of indoor and outdoor activities, including field trips.
  4. Implement behavior management strategies according to the age of the child.
  5. Support the social and emotional development of children.
  6. Keep parents informed of program expectations, activities, and their child’s progress.
  7. Facilitate interactive parent and child literacy activities.
  8. Attend to the personal hygiene of each child in your care.
  9. Maintain an open, friendly, and cooperative relationship with each child’s family and encourage their involvement in the program.
  10. Develop and maintain accurate service records and program documentation including children’s progress using existing data systems.
  11. Help with monthly activity reports and statistical information as required.
  12. Participate in meetings and activities that promote understanding of newcomers.
  13. Work collaboratively with volunteers to ensure efficient and effective CCI events and activities management.
  14. Collaborate with other departments in training employees and volunteers.
  15. Perform other duties assigned by the manager.

QUALIFICATIONS

(Education, Knowledge, Experience, Skills)

  1. Post-secondary education in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Experience in working with youth and children or a similar role.
  3. Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  4. Demonstrates excellent assessment skills and sound judgment in decision-making.
  5. Knowledge of barriers facing marginalized, racialized, newcomer, and refugee populations.
  6. Experience coordinating and facilitating workshops.
  7. Available to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
  8. A valid driver’s license and access to a reliable personal vehicle are required.
  9. Fluency in English is required. Fluency in other languages is an asset.
  10. Training in mental health first aid, and CPR/first aid are assets.
