Status: Temporary Full-time (May 5, 2025 – August 15, 2025)
Hours: 35 hours/week
Salary: $18.20/hr
Work Location: Onsite

Bachelors of Early Learning and Community Development

In line with the BELCD program at Algonquin College, this position also offers the opportunity to complete your 420 hours as a part of your student placement. If you are currently enrolled in the Bachelor’s or Early Learning and Community Development, and are looking for a placement opportunity, you may indicate that as a part of the application process. If you are successful in your application, your placement would start on May 5, 2025, and you would be paid throughout, until August 15, 2025.

Job Summary:

To assist in program operations and service delivery for programs under Children and Family Services, including:

Early ON Child and Family Centre

This position aims to have students participate in developing and implementing the summer programming for our clients, document and evaluate the programming, implement program plans daily, assist in maintaining a healthy and safe environment for all children and families. Successful candidate would be paid for the entire duration of the placement.

Job Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Provide child initiated and adult supported experiences.
  2. Support children, parents and caregivers with a sense of belonging, well-being, engagement and expression through daily routines.
  3. Promote children’s mental health by supporting them to form close and secure relationships with adults and peers and encourage them to experience, manage and express a full range of emotions.
  4. Implement program plans on a daily basis as established or modified;
  5. Assume responsibility for a share of the team tasks (weekly sanitizing, room set up, end of day clean up)
  6. Work with children with special needs and provide adaptations when appropriate.
  7. Be sensitive to the needs and preferences of families.
  8. Complete appropriate observational records as required.
  9. Ensure volunteers are not left unattended with children.
  10. Perform other related duties as assigned.
  11. Plan and develop menus according to Canada’s Food Guide with consideration to dietary restrictions and food allergies (Shelter Respite and Leaping Lizards).

Qualifications:

  1. Diploma in Early Child Education completed or in progress, or comparable post-secondary education preferred.
  2. BELCD studies in progress preferred.
  3. Experience working in an early years environment essential.
  4. Experience in program planning and delivery in accordance to How Does Learning Happen.
  5. Excellent knowledge of child development, emergent curriculum and Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years; How Does Learning Happen.
  6. Experience working with people of diverse cultures and backgrounds in a community-based setting.
  7. Experience and sensitivity working with all families including those in an urban core setting, culturally diverse, 2S LGBTQIA, young parents, etc.
  8. Organizational skills.
  9. Interpersonal skills with both adults and children.
  10. First Aid/CPR certificate an asset (required for Childcare).
  11. Demonstrated ability and experience working with children with special needs.

Personal Suitability/Other Requirements:

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with adults and children.

  • Negative Police Record Check – Vulnerable Sector current in the last 6 months.

The physical demands analysis associated with this job indicates:

  • A light to medium level of work (lifting up to 24 kg or 44 lbs), bending, stooping.
  • The need to have an adequate energy level and ability to meet physical demands of the position.
  • Must be able to work outdoors for at least 1 hour per day year-round; may be exposed to heat, humidity, and cold.
