Job description

Position Summary
The Childcare Centre Cook is responsible for menu planning, purchasing of groceries and supplies and
daily preparation of nutritious meals and snacks served to the childrenenrolled in the centre. The kitchen is to be managed and the work of the Cook is to be conducted in strict compliance with FNHA, Island Health Licensing Regulations and Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government personnel policies. The Cook works in consultation with the Childcare Manager to ensure the smooth operation of the kitchen and its coordination with the other programs of the centre.

Primary/Core Responsibilities
Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government policies,
standards, practices, and procedures, as directed by the Childcare Manager.
Maintains confidentiality on all matters relating to the affairs of the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government.

General
Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ policies, standards
and procedures as directed by the Childcare Manager.
Performs duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Vision, Mission and Value
Statements of the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government and Department of Education and Youth.

Kitchen Duties
Advance planning of lunch menus and snacks in accordance with the Canada Food Guide,
posting of menus for parents and staff.
Conduct housekeeping tasks necessary to maintain the kitchen in an organized, clean, safe,
and hygienic condition at all times and follows sanitization plan when dishwashing.
Deliver and collect lunch/snack trays to/from all on-site programs.
Complete clean up after each meal (i.e. dishes, countertops, etc.)
Meets with the First Nation Health Authority as required to ensure kitchen and practices are in
compliance with License and Regulations.
Regular inventory of kitchen equipment and supplies.

Ordering/Purchasing
Purchase all groceries in order to implement the planned menus, in consideration of the
Centre’s food budget and in consultation with the Childcare Manager.
Purchase all household supplies and equipment for the Centre and maintain a regular
inventory of supplies and equipment.
Unpack and check all orders.
Follow established procedures regarding forwarding of receipts related to purchases.

Program Support
Establish and maintain open communication with parents regarding children’s dietary
restrictions, allergies, etc.
Assist in administration of first aid as required.
Participate in fire drills and other emergency procedures as necessary.
Assist in the childcare programs as required by the Childcare Manager in order to enhance or
maintain child-staff ratios.
Other
Attend staff/program meetings as required.
Attend professional development and other relevant training opportunities when available and
as approved or assigned (i.e. maintain current certification on proper food handling or
professional development to maintain any Early Child Care Education certification).
Participate and/or assist in special events as assigned by the Childcare Manager.
Assists the Childcare Manager in maintaining a safe and health work environment by promptly
reporting any existing and/or potential workplace hazards.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as necessary in the performance of the position, and as
assigned by the Childcare Manager.

Qualifications
Training, Education and Experience
Grade 12 Diploma
Valid Food Safe Certificate
Valid Standard First Aid and Level “C” CPR Certification
Current Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence and access to vehicle.
Satisfactory criminal records check – vulnerable sector
Experience as a cook, preferably in a childcare setting
One to two years experience working in a childcare/daycare setting

Island Health/FNHA guidelines.
