JOB SUMMARY
The Child and Youth Healthy Activities Coordinator is responsible for organizing and promoting fun recreational activities for OKIB youth that focuses on their physical, cultural, artistic, social, and life-skills development. The Child and Youth Healthy Activities Coordinator will respond to the needs and interests of OKIB youth and work collaboratively with a wide range of OKIB departments and outside agencies (i.e. School Districts, Mental Health & Addictions Workers, Child & Family Services, Youth Justice and the RCMP).

SUPPORTS NEEDED

  • Coordinates and delivers programs that contain cultural, artistic, health/wellness, recreational, nutritional, and social components, supervising participants during organized activities
  • Works collaboratively with staff across the Health and Social Development Departments for program creation and delivery
  • Plans and instructs a variety of activities and engages students in fun, recreational and life-long learning objectives
  • Participates in Community Services Division event planning and program delivery that impact youth
  • Work on the land to incorporate culture in activities (Hiking, Canoeing, Snow Shoeing, Gathering etc.)
  • Creates a monthly calendar highlighting activities offered each month for OKIB youth
  • Develops and maintains professional and supportive relationships with children and youth, their families, and other significant figures in the child/youth’s life
  • Refers families and youth to counseling services and other support programs
  • Creates strategies to support youth in healthy development, life skills, and recreation
  • Utilize volunteers (train and monitor as required)
  • Monitors Wellness Center for infection prevention control protocols; compliance to all Covid 19 pandemic protocols
  • Works with Communications staff to efficiently and effectively engage with youth and families. This will require the Child and Youth Healthy Activities Coordinator to be proficient with contemporary forms of technology for communication
  • Maintains program statistics, completes written reports, and completes program evaluation as required
  • Identifies and pursues additional sources of funding for projects, activities and/or events
  • All persons employed by the Okanagan Indian Band may be required to assist the Band in providing emergency services. Duties assigned during an emergency may differ from regular duties
  • Assists with Land based programs and activities including, for example, the Youth Cultural Camp and annual OKIB Hunting Camp
  • Participate in community events as requested

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

  • Creates program plans, writes reports and makes formal presentations
  • Identifies and pursues sources of funding for projects, activities and/or events
  • Undertakes administrative tasks, verifying information and responding to queries
  • Meets, liaises and networks with community groups/services (i.e. RCMP, school districts, social services, youth justice and other agencies to address issues and promote opportunities for young people
  • Liaise with other OKIB staff to determine partnership opportunities
  • Attends team and other meetings as required and approved by Supervisor
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the OKIB policies and procedures
  • Performs other duties as required

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR
You have education, experience, or carry a willingness to learn. You are community-minded, detail-oriented, and an excellent communicator.

Education

  • Two years post-secondary education in child/youth related services and/or recreation programing or comparable experience
  • Current First Aid/CPR certificate or willing to obtain
  • Valid BC Driver’s licence, minimum Class 5, and reliable vehicle
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

Experience

  • Two years’ experience in child/youth related services
  • Experience working with youth programs
  • Experience working with First Nations communities

CLASSIFICATION/PAY SCALE
$23.00 - $28.00 per hour dependant on education and experience
