At the Stop Abuse in Families (SAiF) Society, our mission is to end domestic violence and abuse, fostering safe and healthy relationships through support, education, and advocacy. We are committed to providing trauma-informed care and empowering survivors, witnesses, and perpetrators of abuse to heal and reclaim their lives.

The Child / Youth Counsellor is a part-time position funded with the support of grants and is subject to year-to-year renewal of employment. This is a one-year opportunity with the possibility of extension. Hours are mostly during the day with some evenings, to best meet the needs of clients as well as attend regular case conferencing and clinical supervision. This role offers an hourly rate of $40-45 / hr does not currently include a benefits package.

Position Summary : The Child / Youth Counsellor is required to provide a counselling program for children and youth on behalf of SAiF. This includes individual and group counselling as well as support to other clinical programs.

Position Duties / Responsibilities :

  • Provide assessment, treatment planning, safety planning, psychoeducation, short-term counselling for early-stage interventions and case management for child and youth clients and their families impacted by family violence and abuse (may include survivors of, witnesses to, and perpetrators of, family violence in all its forms);
  • Develop curriculum, coordinate and facilitate psychoeducation and support groups for children / youth as directed by the Executive Director and approved by the Clinical Director;
  • Complete intakes, phone and email consults, and collaborate in providing group counselling to clients (any age) who have witnessed, experienced, and / or perpetrated family violence;
  • Attend and participate in case conferences, clinical supervision and staff meetings as required;
  • Maintain documentation on client files according to ethical codes and clinical standards of practice for the Alberta professional regulatory body with which you are registered;
  • Develop and / or enhance relationships with Province of Alberta (groups), Greater Edmonton, St. Albert, Sturgeon County, Parkland County, and other rural and municipal community partners within the sector;
  • Provide website, social media, and other marketing / communications content as requested (which may include but is not limited to coordinating photos / videos to promote SAiF and its programs / services);
  • Monitor and assess emerging issues / needs and best practices in the sector, while evaluating the effectiveness of existing programs and services;
  • Collect and report on program statistics and other data necessary to meet organization requirements;
  • Other duties as required as part of being a member of SAiF’s staff team.

Required Education / Experience :

  • Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology, Clinical Social Work, and / or similar human services degree eligible to provide psychotherapy, assessment, diagnosis, and research of psychosocial health related to problems of interpersonal abuse;
  • Be registered in good standing with a professional regulatory body in Alberta (such as College of Alberta Psychologists or Alberta College of Social Workers);
  • Awareness of gender issues, human rights issues, violence prevention, etc.;
  • Training in a recognized Child Play Therapy Program (either in progress or completed) or experience with Child Play Therapy under the supervision of a Clinical Supervisor with a specialty in this area.
  • Essential and Preferred Skills :

  • The ability to develop rapport with minors and their parents, case conceptualization, and motivate clients towards change;
  • An understanding of, and commitment to, anti-oppression principles and practices with experience in trauma-informed and client-centered counselling;
  • A high degree of proficiency in both oral and written communication;
  • Computer literacy, specifically Outlook, Excel, Word, and digital clinical record programs like SUMAC;
  • A strong attention to detail when required; is able to multi-task and prioritize their own workload;
  • The ability to work collaboratively on a multi-disciplinary team and demonstrate leadership when needed.
  • Familiarity with appropriate legislation, bylaws and guidelines relevant to work with children and populations experiencing family violence.
  • Additional Requirements :

  • Current criminal and vulnerable persons’ sector checks.
  • Children’s Services intervention check.
  • Proof of professional registration.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle.
