Child and Youth Care Practitioner (2 positions)

Serving West Hants/Eastern Kings Schools

Position to start on September 8, 2025 (12 months per year; 7 hours per day)

Starting Wages: $28.20 per hour

The Child and Youth Care Worker under the direction of the Coordinator of Student Services works with assigned students in schools and is responsible for collaborating with school teams to help design and carry out proactive, evidence-based programming for students who have social, emotional, and behavior issues. This may include:

• working with complex students P-12 directly in educational settings, identifying services for students who have difficulty coping in school/educational settings.
• engaging in, and supporting effective connections and communications between the school, the families and other appropriate community agencies to meet student needs.
• working collaboratively with families, administrators, classroom teachers, educational assistants, community based agencies, programs and student services regional staff.
• assisting students to develop social skills and self-regulation through community based, recreation, summer and after school programs.

REQUIREMENTS :

The Child and Youth Care Practitioner will require the completionof a two-year Child and Youth Care Practitioner Program. Confirmation of your educational qualifications must be included with your application.

• Experience working with children and youth in an educational setting is preferred.
• Membership in the Nova Scotia Child and Youth Care Workers’ Association is an asset.
• The ability to establish proactive relationships with and provide appropriate interventions for vulnerable children and youth impacted by developmental trauma and or behavioral, social-emotional and mental health challenges.
• The ability to apply evidence informed interventions related to social emotional learning and culturally responsive pedagogy.
• The ability to apply knowledge of early childhood development as it relates to academic, behavior and social-emotional success through a Multi-Tiered Support System (MTSS).
• The ability to collaboratively program plan to support academic, behavior and social-emotional success for students.
• The ability to apply effective mediation and conflict resolution, pre-esclation and de-esclation strategies.
• The ability to work effectively in flexible work situations; i.e. visit homes when required to provide the link between the school and the home to support student success; accompany students on community outings, work sites and other sites as outlined in the student's plan.

• The ability to utilize current technologies to support students experiencing self-regulation and communication challenges.
• The ability to work & communicate effectively with students.
• The ability to maintain and promote confidentiality expectations.
• The ability to work collaboratively with teachers, educational assistants, administrators, specialists and others to support the implementation of appropriate interventions and programming for assigned students.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Access to a Vehicle.
• Current First Aid and CPR.
• Current Nonviolent crisis intervention.(considered an asset)
