At the Department of Opportunities and Social Development (OSD), we are a large and diverse department providing a broad portfolio of programs and services including Child and Family Wellbeing (CFW), Employment Support Services (ESS), Income Assistance (IA), Homelessness and Supportive Housing, and Disability Support Program (DSP).
Through our services, we advocate and help vulnerable Nova Scotians be independent, self-reliant, and secure. We work collaboratively across the province with a strong dedicated network of supports and staff to achieve shared outcomes for all.
We're hiring dedicated Child Protection Social Workers to join our team in various program areas including Assessment, Ongoing Support, Children in Care, and the Consolidated Allegations Investigations Team (CAIT). In this vital role, you will provide a wide array of professional child and family wellbeing services, including planning for and supervising children in the care of the Minister, liaising with partners and communities, and advocating for children and families.
You will support and demonstrate an inclusive, respectful, safe, and supportive workplace culture. Under the Children and Family Services Act (CFSA) and the Act respecting First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Children, Youth, and Families (FNIM), your role will actively work towards ensuring children's safety and wellbeing, providing ongoing supports to parents and children, and collaborating with program areas to find safe living arrangements for children.
Daily, you will engage with people and communities to build resilience, address challenges and trauma, and create change. Your responsibilities will include:
A completed Master of Social Work or a Bachelor of Social Work with at least two (2) years of related experience, along with a driver's license, are required. You must be eligible for registration with the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers (NSCSW). You are:
You possess a deep understanding of child development, family dynamics, trauma-informed care, and community resources. You are well-versed in intervention strategies. Your problem-solving skills and creative thinking enhance support for children and families, contributing to their well-being and growth.
We will assess these qualifications and competencies through tools such as written examinations, standardized tests, oral presentations, interviews, and reference checks.
A typical workday is between 8 am and 5 pm. Most meetings with clients or service providers will involve travel, sometimes in adverse weather. The office provides a comfortable environment with flexible work options. You may be required to provide after-hours services on a rotating schedule, including weekends, and work beyond regular hours on short notice. Resilience and the ability to work under pressure are essential, as you will handle high-stress and crisis situations with support and resources available.
Two (2) opportunities are available: one (1) permanent and one (1) term ending around September 17, 2026. Wage adjustments will be applied temporarily from April 1, 2024, increasing pay by 4% for Child Protection Social Worker 1 and 6% for Child Protection Social Worker 2, based on biweekly rates. Salary ranges from $2,556.10 to $3,507.08 biweekly, with potential future increases.
