Primary Responsibilities
- Perform Intake, ongoing family services and children services functions under a generic model
- Gather information and conduct investigations and assessments of the immediate safety of the children
- Intervene in crisis situations, including movement of children at risk to a place of safety as mandated by the Child, Youth and Family Services Act
- Develop relationships with children and families to facilitate assessment of strengths and needs
- Participate in consultations, Talking Circle / OTC, and case conferences with service providers and family’s FNMI Community, to discuss care plans and service needs
- Evaluate child's needs continually while in care and revise the plan as required
- Coordinate internal/external service requirements for child and family, advocate for culturally appropriate and timely services, and develop partnerships in service planning
- Determine need for admission of children to care, liaise with Placement Worker for placement decisions
- Coordinate and develop Customary Care Agreements with families, community members, and Band representatives
- Facilitate ongoing contact between the child and family/extended family/FNMI community, and provide counselling/support during access visits
- Intervene in crisis situations, facilitate resolution, and develop plans with service providers to prevent recurrence
- Coordinate court-related requirements, including preparing evidentiary materials and appearing as a witness if needed
- Complete case recordings, reports, and legal forms
- Participate in public communication and education activities
Qualifications, Knowledge & Skills
- Recognized and respected by their community, with lived experience and understanding of Indigenous worldviews and teachings; community respect considered an asset.
- B.S.W. from an accredited university with at least 2 years relevant experience in Child and Family Wellbeing
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience in Indigenous family and children issues
- Valid Driver’s License and reliable vehicle access
- Extensive knowledge of Indigenous Peoples' history and culture, including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit
- Ability to provide Child Welfare Check with Vulnerable Sector Check
- Knowledge of Child, Youth and Family Services Act, Abuse Protocols, Risk Assessment Model, and OnLAC
- Knowledge of child development, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning
- Knowledge of Toronto Indigenous community and child welfare history
- Excellent written and verbal communication, organizational skills, ability to multitask, and respect for confidentiality
- Completed Authorization Training is an asset
- Understanding and commitment to integrating the Mission and values of Native Child and Family Services
- Understanding of workplace Health and Safety practices and legislation
- Ability to work effectively with all staff levels, demonstrating interpersonal skills, tact, sensitivity, and relationship-building
