About The Role

We are seeking an experienced Chief Technology Officer (CTO) - Nano-Optoelectronics to join our client's dynamic team in Calgary, Alberta. This is an exciting leadership opportunity to guide a rapidly growing R&D organization through its transition from innovation to commercialization. As CTO, you will be instrumental in shaping the company's technology strategy, mentoring a talented team, and ensuring that our client's cutting-edge innovations are successfully brought to market.

Reporting directly to the CEO and the Board of Directors, this role involves strategic oversight of the R&D functions and will require you to travel approximately 10% of the time. You will manage a team of 4-5 direct reports and work closely with key business leaders to drive alignment between technology development and overall company goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor the R&D team, setting a clear strategic direction and ensuring effective execution.
  • Spearhead the commercialization of technology, ensuring innovations meet market demands and industry standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including business leaders, to align R&D efforts with the company’s broader vision and cultural values.
  • Oversee the manufacturing and procurement processes, ensuring seamless product rollouts.
  • Foster a strong, collaborative company culture while encouraging continuous innovation and growth.

Mandatory Requirements

  • Education : A degree in Electrical Engineering, with a strong preference for experience in nanotechnology and power electronics.
  • Experience : Proven success in leading R&D teams, particularly in commercializing technology and executing successful go-to-market strategies.
  • Manufacturing & Procurement : In-depth understanding of manufacturing and procurement processes essential for bringing products to market.
  • Leadership : A demonstrated ability to mentor and enhance existing R&D capabilities, while driving the successful monetization of new technologies.
  • Communication : Ability to translate complex engineering and scientific concepts to non-technical stakeholders, including the Board of Directors, and serve as the company’s technology evangelist.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience managing large-scale technology transitions from research to market.
  • Strong knowledge of intellectual property (IP) management, including licensing and partnership strategies.
  • Familiarity with regulatory compliance, particularly in the medical device and energy sectors.
  • Experience with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks) or other related software platforms is a plus.
  • PMP certification is a nice-to-have.
  • Expertise in assessing technologies and identifying high-potential products.
  • TSA Flight Certification (for ease of travel when needed).
