Job description

Advancing Nova Scotia’s health care through Information Technology leadership

Nova Scotia Health is dedicated to excellence in health, healing and learning, providing health services to Nova Scotians and specialized services to Maritimers and Atlantic Canadians. An integrated, provincial health organization, Nova Scotia Health brings together 23,000 employees, 2,600 physicians, 8,733 nurses, 5,000 learners and 7,000 volunteers. With nine regional hospitals, one quaternary care centre and over 135 service sites, including community hospitals and community services, Nova Scotia Health is supported by over 40 Health Care Foundations and 33 auxiliaries that raise funds to support facilities, health care innovation and services.

Nova Scotia Health is committed to best enabling and further advancing healthcare through strategic investments in systems, processes, and technology; strong leadership is critical to the mission. Reporting to the Vice President, Corporate Services, Infrastructure & CFO, the Chief Information Officer (CIO) is responsible for the planning and execution of the Information Management and Information Technology (IMIT) strategy that supports the organization’s Digital Health Vision. The CIO will also have functional reporting to the Chief Operating Officer at IWK Health to support the work related to a provincial clinical information system. The CIO leads IMIT operations and collaborates with internal and external partners to create and achieve the Digital Health Strategy. As per the shared services model within the province, the CIO also oversees the IMIT team as it is responsible for providing clinical application and other related services to the IWK. The CIO is a catalyst, visionary, and trusted partner with the many groups that make NSH’s digital environment successful.

A visible leader, the CIO advances the digital agenda on many fronts, including:

  1. Transforming scheduling, self-registration, virtual care, and clinical information systems;
  2. Medical equipment advances in procedures such as robotics;
  3. Improved care plans through AI;
  4. Communicating actionable insights that improve processes such as patient access and flow;
  5. Digital transformation in finance, HR, supply chain, facilities, and food services;
  6. Ensuring high digital dexterity and literacy of teams to improve experiences and efficiencies.

The successful candidate has at least seven (7) years experience at a senior IT leadership level involved in Clinical Applications IT in health care, including directing and overseeing Clinical Application IT services and developing Clinical IT strategy. A university degree in Health Informatics or Computer Science is required, with a preference for graduate-level education in a related field. Strong knowledge of health care issues and experience in the health system is an asset, as is a Medical or Health Sciences background. The successful candidate is skilled at translating information technologies and solid business understanding into innovation, efficiency, and quality initiatives. They have demonstrated consistent strong leadership, and have a track record of building and fostering a culture of high performance. Adept at navigating and engaging a dynamic stakeholder community, they have a bias for action, a problem-solver who is motivated to see others succeed within a large, complex, collaborative organization.
