Position Overview The Chief Grower will oversee all greenhouse growing operations, ensuring optimal growing conditions to produce high-quality flowers and plants. This role requires a strategic leader with a strong horticultural background, capable of managing teams across multiple locations and provinces, optimizing cultivation methods, and implementing pest and disease control measures. The Chief Grower will provide technical expertise and growing direction to a team of Head Growers across multiple sites, ensuring alignment with company goals and fostering a culture of responsibility, initiative, and excellence in company growing techniques.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, direct, and control all daily growing operations.
- Maintain environmental conditions required to grow high-quality flowers and plants.
- Provide technical expertise and direction to the growing team across sites.
- Oversee the development and execution of site-specific growing strategies and production plans.
- Identify and control insect, disease, and weed problems through integrated pest management (IPM) strategies.
- Develop and apply cultivation methods that improve plant outcomes, focusing on innovation and continuous improvement.
- Foster a culture of accountability, initiative, and growth within the growing teams.
- Align growing tasks with production teams/labour with efficiency and quality objectives.
- Monitor and manage resource use (water, nutrients, natural gas, electricity) to ensure optimal efficiency.
- Stay updated on industry trends and implement innovative growing techniques.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations across all sites.
- Prepare, assist, and manage budgets for greenhouse operations.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Agriculture, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
- Minimum 20 years’ experience in commercial greenhouse operations, with at least 10 years in a leadership role.
- Strong knowledge of plant biology, pest management, and modern cultivation techniques.
- Proven ability to lead and develop high-performing teams across multiple locations.
- Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
- Proficient in greenhouse management software and data analysis.
