The CFO will oversee all financial operations in Canada and the U.S., ensuring strong financial management, compliance, and strategic planning. The ideal candidate will have public company experience, a CPA designation, and a proven track record in fundraising, investor relations, and financial structuring.
This role requires a hands-on leader who is comfortable setting up financial structures, managing day-to-day financial operations, and guiding the company’s U.S. expansion. The CFO will work closely with the CEO and leadership team to scale operations, manage capital, and ensure financial stability while optimizing vendor relationships and ERP systems.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute the company’s financial strategy to support both short-term operational goals and long-term growth.
- Oversee financial planning, forecasting, and risk management to ensure financial stability.
- Lead the preparation of financial statements, budgets, and investor reports, ensuring accuracy and compliance with regulations.
- Provide strategic financial guidance to the CEO, board, and leadership team to optimize profitability and scalability.
- Serve as the key financial advisor for business development, mergers & acquisitions (M&A), and investment opportunities.
Financial Operations & Compliance:
- Oversee all financial operations in Canada and the U.S., ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and financial reporting standards.
- Implement and maintain strong internal controls and financial processes to safeguard company assets.
- Manage accounting, tax, payroll, and treasury functions, ensuring operational efficiency.
- Ensure adherence to financial regulations, including IFRS for reporting and U.S. financial structuring where applicable.
- Oversee audits and tax filings, working with external auditors and tax consultants to ensure compliance.
Investor Relations & Capital Management:
- Lead capital raising efforts, including equity financing, debt structuring, and investor relations.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with banks, investors, and financial institutions to secure funding and optimize capital structure.
- Manage cash flow and liquidity to ensure sufficient working capital for business operations.
- Develop financial models and business cases to support investment decisions and business growth.
Operational Efficiency & Growth Support:
- Guide the setup and structuring of U.S. operations, including tax planning, payroll, and regulatory compliance.
- Lead ERP implementation and optimization.
- Oversee vendor and supplier management, negotiating contracts and optimizing procurement processes.
- Work closely with operations, sales, and supply chain teams to align financial planning with business goals.
- Monitor and improve financial KPIs, providing data-driven insights to enhance operational efficiency.
- Lead and mentor the finance team, including the Director of Finance, Financial Controller, and Senior Financial Controller.
- Build and scale the finance department as the company expands in the U.S. and beyond.
- Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and financial discipline across the organization.
Experience / Education:
- Public company experience required, particularly in regulated industries.
- 10+ years of senior finance leadership experience in cannabis, beverage, manufacturing, or other high-growth sectors.
- Strong understanding of U.S. financial regulations, tax structures, and reporting. IFRS experience is a plus.
- Fundraising and investor relations expertise is critical.
- Experience structuring and scaling financial operations in new markets, particularly the U.S.
- ERP systems expertise (Epicor preferred, but open to SAP, NetSuite, etc.).
- Ability to be hands-on in financial processes while shaping long-term strategy.
- M&A experience is a plus, particularly in U.S. market expansion.
