Job description

We are a Canadian, venture-backed hard-tech company developing and commercializing innovative technology with the potential to address a significant global market.

The company has raised through to Series A and is now entering an important transition: from a predominantly research and development organization toward a commercially oriented technology company with customers, manufacturing capabilities and increasing operational complexity.

Future capital raises in the coming years are expected to come from both financial & strategic equity. As the business develops commercial traction, the company expects to establish access to appropriate forms of debt financing. The Company’s fundraising is supported by an experienced investment banking firm.

We are seeking an experienced CFO or VP Finance to lead the company's financial strategy, governance and financial planning while working across the organization to build the systems, processes and information required to manage and scale the business.

The successful candidate will be a business partner to the CEO and leadership team, and a cross-functional leader who can translate technical, commercial and operational information into a credible financial plan and provide the Company with the financial infrastructure required for commercialization.

The Opportunity

This is a unique opportunity for a senior financial executive to join a company at a pivotal stage of development.

The Company has already demonstrated its ability to attract significant investment. The next phase requires building the financial, commercial and operational infrastructure that will allow the Company to convert its technology and R&D achievements into a scalable commercial business.

The CFO will have a significant role in that transformation and will work directly with the CEO, Board and leadership team to help shape the Company's next stage of growth.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the Company's integrated financial planning and forecasting process, maintaining a robust financial model that integrates information from the Business Development, R&D, Engineering and Manufacturing teams, ensuring that Management and the Board have confidence that the Company's financial forecast is grounded.
  • Continuously improve the quality and reliability of the financial model and support Company leadership in refining assumptions and forecasts to incorporate underlying commercial evidence.
  • Provide Management and the Board with clear analysis of actual results versus forecast, including the underlying reasons for significant variances.
  • Drive the development of the financial and cost-accounting capabilities required as the Company moves into manufacturing and product licensing.
  • Working with Manufacturing and Operations, establish appropriate systems and processes to develop increasingly sophisticated visibility into the Company's operating costs and gross margins as commercial production develops.
  • Work closely with other team leads to develop a roadmap for the Company's business systems and processes, and lead the evolution of the Company's financial and operational systems and processes from those appropriate for an R&D-stage organization to systems capable of supporting a growing commercial and manufacturing business.
  • Work with the CEO and leadership team to prioritize investments in business software and people, and ensure that systems are implemented effectively rather than simply purchased. Ensure that systems and processes are scalable as the Company begins receiving purchase orders and moving toward commercial production.
  • Provide strong financial leadership and governance appropriate for a rapidly growing venture-backed, multi jurisdictional Company, including budgeting, internal and external reporting, financial policies and procedures ensuring that Management and the Board have timely, accurate and useful financial information.
  • Work closely with the CEO, Board and the Company's investment banking advisors to support the Company's capital strategy.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with potential debt providers, including traditional banks, venture lenders, equipment financiers and other appropriate sources of growth capital, positioning the Company to access debt as technical, commercial and revenue milestones are achieved.
  • Work with the CEO and leadership team to prioritize expenditures and ensure that capital is allocated to the activities most important to achieving the Company's strategic milestones.
  • Become a key member of the senior leadership team and act as the financial integrator across the Company.
  • Build and develop a finance organization appropriate to each stage of the Company's development.
  • Ensure sound treasury management.
  • Oversee consolidated reporting, intercompany, and multi currency management across multiple entities, ensuring the books stay clean and audit-ready.
  • Lead and develop the finance team.
Qualifications:
  • Chartered Professional Accountant with significant experience as a CFO, VP Finance or senior finance executive in a venture-backed hard tech company.
  • Experience with companies undergoing significant growth and organizational change.
  • Experience with companies that have raised substantial venture and strategic equity capital, along with non-dilutive funding, including involvement in the process from term sheet, due diligence, through to closing.
  • Experience developing detailed financial models in environments where many of the underlying assumptions are uncertain.
  • Experience working closely with commercial teams to develop defendable revenue forecasts.
  • Experience working with technical/R&D organizations to translate development programs into financial forecasts.
  • Experience with manufacturing, operations or other capital-intensive environments.
  • Strong financial planning, forecasting and analytical capabilities.
  • Experience working with Boards and sophisticated investors.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing costing, cash management, and capital allocation.

Highly Desirable Experience

  • Deep-tech, advanced manufacturing, industrial technology, cleantech, biotech or another capital-intensive technology environment.
  • Experience taking a company from R&D through commercialization.
  • Experience developing cost accounting and manufacturing finance capabilities.
  • Experience implementing or upgrading ERP and other business systems.
  • Experience with venture debt, equipment financing or other forms of growth debt.
  • Canadian tax, SR&ED and government funding experience.
  • International business experience.
