Job description

Leading buildings & infrastructure contractor is seeking a Chief Estimator with experience across civil and infrastructure projects to join their team in Toronto, ON. Our client provides a collaborative and caring culture, along with the necessary tools and support for success, both personally and professionally. Outpost Recruitment is excited to partner with our client on this full-time, permanent role.

Reporting to the District Manager, the Chief Estimator is responsible for overseeing all estimating operations within a business unit. This includes supervising the estimating process, developing divisional manpower, coaching and mentoring staff, providing input into project pursuit approvals, overseeing resource allocation, reviewing estimates, and managing tender submissions.

Responsibilities of Chief Estimator :

• Encourage and instill coaching and mentoring skills within the estimating team.
• Oversee all estimates, including detailed reviews of others’ work.
• Complete project scope reviews to ensure estimates are comprehensive, including technical specifications, subcontractor scopes, and general condition items.
• Identify and develop constructability requirements for high-level budgeting and order of magnitude estimates.
• Propose and approve project risk mitigation, cost-saving opportunities, and bid strategies.
• Lead the estimating team on major complex project pursuits.
• Build effective relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, suppliers, and internal teams, reflecting core company values.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

• Strong understanding of contract language and legal requirements.
• Excellent technical, organizational, managerial, and planning skills.
• Leadership qualities with strong interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills.
• Ability to develop and assess bid strategies.
• Strategic thinking and innovation in estimating and market relationships.
• Experience with various delivery methods including Bid-Build, Design-Build, Construction Management, and IPD.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

Experience and Qualifications :

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; certifications such as Gold Seal, LEED, MRICS, or CIQS are assets.
• Over 15 years of combined field and estimating experience, with at least 5 years in senior estimating roles within a medium-to-large general contractor.
• Leadership experience in roads, bridges, rail, or infrastructure projects.
• Experience in Water/Wastewater and Transit projects is advantageous.
• Proven success in leading Level 3+ projects and mentoring teams.
• Proficiency in design-build and other procurement types.
• Strong safety commitment and leadership.
• Commitment to professional development and career growth opportunities across North America.

Compensation :

Competitive salary: $160,000 – $220,000 depending on experience. Benefits include 4 weeks’ vacation, transit pass, fitness membership, training, summer hours, and more.
