About The Branch

The Building & Safety Standards branch is responsible for ensuring building projects meet or exceed the existing codes and standards throughout the Yukon. Through the administration and enforcement of acts and regulations concerning Building/Plumbing Safety and zoning, the branch oversees building permits, inspections, and code compliance to protect public health and safety. By working closely with industry professionals, communities, and other government departments, the Building Safety Branch helps foster safe, resilient, and well-built environments across Yukon.

About The Role

Reporting to the Director, Building & Safety Standards this position is responsible for managing the effective, efficient operation of the building/plumbing safety unit. The incumbent administers and applies acts and regulations concerning Building/Plumbing Safety and zoning to ensure the safety of public throughout the territory.

Essential Qualifications

  • Journeyman’s Red Seal ticket in Carpentry or Plumbing;
  • Experience interpreting and applying the National Building Code of Canada (NBC) in construction and/or inspection context
  • Experience reviewing plans for compliance with applicable codes and standards
  • Experience conducting inspections for an Authority Having Jurisdiction
  • Experience supervising subordinates

Candidates who have education, training, and/or experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above may be equally considered.

Desired Knowledge, Skills, And Suitability

Candidates should have and may be assessed on:

  • Ability to interpret and apply the National Building Code
  • Ability to perform a variety of inspections to determine appropriate practices and the permit application process
  • Ability to review plans, blueprints and installation schematics for code compliance
  • Level 1 or higher building inspector training or equivalent
  • Experience applying safety practices and procedures in a workplace setting
  • Ability to work as part of a team to deliver excellent client service
  • Ability to collaborate with stakeholders
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with conflict resolution and team leadership

Additional Information

Condition(s) of Employment: Valid Class 5 driver’s license

Job Requirements: Lifting weights up to 25lbs; climbing ladders and scaffolding; working in confined spaces; extensive travel within Yukon, usually by motor vehicle; working in adverse weather conditions; mandatory use of personal protective equipment and branch safety plan.

This position is based out of the Whitehorse office.
