Job description

Job Purpose

To provide complete responsibility for carrying out synthetic projects in the lab and contribute to a safe working environment. Keep an accurate record of all work with an eye to reproducibility and recording of costs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up and organize equipment and reactions to operate safely.
  • Plan, develop, and troubleshoot complex multi-step syntheses.
  • Possess expert knowledge in a wide variety of organic laboratory techniques, including but not limited to water and oxygen-sensitive chemistry, microscale manipulations, and modern organometallic synthetic methods.
  • Experience in natural product extraction and/or photochemistry is an asset.
  • Interpret spectral data independently to characterize products of complex structures.
  • Perform process development and research.
  • Develop methods for separating complex mixtures using fundamental and advanced purification techniques such as ion-exchange chromatography, reverse-phase chromatography, and automated purification methods.
  • Manage multiple projects of varying lengths and complexities.

Education Requirements:

  • PhD or equivalent experience in synthetic organic chemistry.
  • Competent knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry reagents and common laboratory techniques.

Role Dimensions

  • Collaborate with Lab Supervisor and chemistry production team to resolve technical issues.
  • Coordinate with Finished Goods & Logistics team and Receiving regarding materials.
  • Work with Analytical team for product testing.
  • Coordinate with Maintenance & Facilities regarding equipment issues.
  • Engage with Human Resources on personnel issues and policies.
  • Work with Environmental Health & Safety regarding safety policies.
