Major Responsibilities:

  • Performs organic/inorganic/physical testing and analysis of water, wastewater, sewage, biosolids, landfill, leachates, sludge, and industrial wastes to ensure compliance with applicable regulations, escalates results not in compliance.
  • Participates in method validation work, in compliance with laboratory quality management system.
  • Operates in complete accordance with all regulatory requirements, ensuring testing and analysis adheres to quality assurance/quality control procedures.
  • Carries out sample preparation including portioning, measuring, weighing, dissolving, digesting or extracting for further analysis.
  • Receives samples, performs testing and ensures sample data is recorded throughout the testing process. Review results and quality control data.
  • Enters, reviews and approves analytical data using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). Performs calculations manually or utilizing computers.
  • Ensures and conducts proper disposal of samples, chemicals and hazardous waste. Neutralizes samples prior to disposal (i.e. mercury waste/solvents/phenolic waste).
  • Contributes to the updating and maintenance of documents regarding the laboratory quality system and adherence to all Quality Management System policies.
  • Participates in proficiency testing (PT) as a requirement for accreditation.
  • Adheres to Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Participates in the testing and validation of instrumentation to ensure compliance with the laboratories quality management system. Documents date of completion and expiry. Maintains record of same.
  • Assists with troubleshooting malfunctions and conducting preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
  • Participates in accreditation assessments, ministry inspections and internal/external audits.
  • Contributes to the preparation of documents for court processes. Attends court as a witness.
  • Adheres to chain of custody protocol for all court case samples
  • Demonstrates testing methods to staff and provides direction to students by providing technical/functional instructions on laboratory procedures.
  • Orders lab supplies and maintains inventory.


Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  • Post secondary education in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Environmental Studies
  • Experience in organic or chemical testing of either water, wastewater, sludge, biosolids and/or landfill samples.
  • Experience conducting mathematical calculations required for analytical chemistry.
  • Experience in instrumental methods of analysis and experience with lab instrumentation including autosamplers, absorption/emission/mass spectrophotometers, and/or various chromatographic instruments.
  • Experience with computers and software such as MS Office Suite, including familiarity with database and spreadsheet software.
  • Minimum 3 years experience in an accredited and licenced laboratory.


You must also have:

  • Ability to work in an organized and tidy manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with lab clients and other lab staff and work as part of a team.
  • Must be familiar with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and the Regulations that apply to this work.
  • Must be available to travel to various work locations, as required.
  • Ability to work regular shifts, including weekends and overtime as required.
  • Experience with a LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of ISO17025 would be an asset.
