Job description

The Chemical Analyst will be responsible for the effective and efficient operation of aluminum surface treatment for a highly automated paint line, ensuring optimal coating adhesion and compliance with product quality requirements. This role also maintains wastewater treatment and extrusion die cleaning processes. Your goal is to ensure operations of these processes are being done consistently according to established procedures and are compliant with regulatory safety and environmental requirements.

What You Will Do

  • Aluminum surface treatment analysis and process control
    • Conduct day-to-day routine chemical titration and analysis for powder coating paint line to verify the effectiveness of cleaning, etching and conversion coating stages.
    • Prepare samples and conduct etching rate testing.
    • Conduct routine analysis of pre-treatment baths, including pH, conductivity, concentration and contamination level. Adjust chemical dosing and replenishment as needed to maintain process stability.
    • Maintain up-to-date records of surface treatment tests, interpret/analyze results and ensure specifications for aluminum surface preparations are being met.
    • Conduct additional quality tests when needed.
    • Conduct routine checks on surface treatment equipment, including tanks, pumps and filtration systems. Report any issues or need for maintenance.
  • Perform start-up check in Vertical Paint Line to ensure DI System, Wastewater Treatment system, tank level, dosing pumps, and chemical solution are within required operating requirements.
  • Identify issues related to the pre-treatment process and collaborate with stakeholders to optimize the pre-treatment process.
  • Perform wastewater treatment day-to-day operations
    • Effluent monitoring and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and discharge permits.
    • Adjust chemical dosing to neutralize or remove contaminants from wastewater.
    • Collection of samples and coordinate laboratory testing (pH, turbidity and contaminant levels).
    • Conduct routine checks on wastewater treatment equipment, including tanks, pumps and filter press systems. Report any issues or need for maintenance.
    • Maintain an up-to-date record of wastewater treatment operations and comply with applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with PPE requirements for chemical handling, disposal and related quality and environmental requirements.
  • Monitor and record chemical consumption to optimize usage, including incoming stock amount and calculate monthly consumption. Maintain records up to date.
  • Conduct analysis on die cleaning solutions, complete reports and coordinate results.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment safely and effectively.
  • Conduct analysis for products with quality issues and when evaluation is required.
  • Prepare test samples to the external laboratory, suppliers, and provide the required documentation.
  • Assist in conducting laboratory trials for new chemicals and improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor the hook cleaning process and conduct analysis when required.
  • Ensure surface treatment area, wastewater treatment and QC laboratory cleanliness and organization are maintained.
Qualifications

  • Must be able to work full-time Monday to Friday 40hrs/week (Monday - Thursday 5:30 am - 2:30 pm and Fridays 5:30 am - 12:00 pm).
  • A minimum of at least 1 year in an Aluminum extrusion company with knowledge of aluminum surface treatment and wastewater treatment principles.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment/chemical processes with an automated system and process control.
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or equivalent experience as a Chemical Technologist or Chemical Technician.
  • Knowledge of chemical analysis techniques (e.g., pH, titration, spectrophotometry, other lab procedures).
  • History in customer relations and technical support for Aluminum extrusion and chemical processes.
