Le ou la chef de train fait partie d'une équipe de train formée de deux ou trois personnes, et s'acquitte des tâches associées à la circulation des trains, des wagons et des locomotives dans les triages et sur la route. La personne titulaire du poste coordonne la formation des trains et cette personne effectue des travaux au sol à l'extérieur de la cabine de la locomotive dans le triage et en cours de route (manœuvre des aiguillages, ramassage des wagons et réparations d'urgence).

La personne titulaire du poste participe à une formation rémunérée intensive de 11 semaines (7 en classe et 4 sur le terrain) au Campus CN à Winnipeg. Les dépenses relatives au transport, à l'hébergement et aux repas pendant la formation à Winnipeg sont payés. Une fois les 11 semaines de formation terminée, le ou la titulaire du poste effectue au moins 45 voyages en accompagnant une équipe afin de parfaire ses connaissances et ses aptitudes. La réussite à ce programme de formation, y compris les examens écrits et la formation sur le terrain incluant les exigences physiques, est obligatoire pour travailler à titre de chef de train.
