Qualifications

Job description

Based in a world-class Horizon North camp facility, the regular shift for this position is 14 days on and 7 days off, with 12-hour workdays. Transportation is provided to site from a pickup point in Edmonton.

The Chef is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation of the kitchen, including ordering food ingredients and menu planning. Additional responsibilities include assisting with the preparation, serving, and control of cooked and uncooked food, training staff, and ensuring adherence to Horizon North Food Safety protocols. The Chef is a hands-on leader, focused on developing team skills and providing excellent service to guests and clients.

This site has 3 Chefs rotating between 2 lodge kitchens, so the ideal candidate should communicate and collaborate effectively with other Chefs.

This position is safety-sensitive and requires drug and alcohol testing and a fitness assessment as a condition of employment.

Your work will include:

  1. Preparing, presenting, designing, and serving high-quality rotational menus.
  2. Managing kitchen staff productivity and compliance with Horizon North policies, including health, safety, and quality standards.
  3. Leading training, development, and mentoring of employees.
  4. Ensuring all foods are prepared using FOODSAFE and HACCP methods, following safety guidelines.
  5. Using resources efficiently and effectively.
  6. Serving clients and staff professionally and personable.
  7. Applying knowledge of dietary restrictions, allergies, vegan, and vegetarian options in meal planning.
  8. Conducting bi-weekly inventory.
  9. Completing administrative tasks such as scheduling and reporting.
  10. This is a working Chef position requiring a balance of administrative and production duties.

Qualifications

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

  • Journeyperson or interprovincial Red Seal Certificate holder.
  • Advanced food safety certification.
  • At least 10 years of experience in the hospitality/food service industry.
  • Minimum of 5 years as a Chef in hotels, resorts, restaurants, or remote lodges, with knowledge of international and domestic cuisines.
  • Proficiency in computer programs such as Microsoft Excel, Word, GFS, Outlook.
  • Extensive knowledge of menu costing, recipe implementation, and wage control.
  • Strong practical and theoretical skills across kitchen areas: hot, cold, pastry/bakery, butchery, and banquets.
  • Effective leadership style, positive personality, and good listening skills.
  • Passion for the food service industry and team motivation.
  • Understanding of safety systems and leading by example to promote safety culture.
