Job description


Duties:

The Chair is responsible for supporting faculty and students in a learning community that focuses on best practices.

  • Overseeing the operations of the English Language Learning Department and supporting faculty and students;
  • Liaising with other chairs in the Faculty of Academic Career and Preparation (ACP) and other support staff;
  • Assisting with new student orientation;
  • Coordinating and chairing regular faculty meetings and other working group meetings;
  • Preparing calendars, schedules, timetables, and reports as needed;
  • Overseeing curriculum maintenance (managing textbook selection and ordering;
  • Maintaining teacher resources; and updating the learning outcomes if necessary);
  • Approving requests to skip students;
  • Reviewing international students' leave of absence requests;
  • Overseeing assessment testing and placement;
  • Participating in program initiatives;
  • Facilitating other projects determined and prioritized with faculty committees;
  • Providing guidance and orientation to new instructors;
  • Sitting on hiring selection committees;
  • Representing the ELL Department on university-wide committees or the broader VIU community;
  • And other duties as required by the Associate Dean and/or Dean of the ACP Faculty.

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning, and student success through ongoing professional training, subject currency, and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support, institutional, faculty and department committees, meetings and other initiatives, and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.


Required Qualifications:

  • Must be a current regular BCGEU Instructor in the ELL department.
  • Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution;
  • TESL certificate or diploma recognized by TESL Canada, or meets equivalent TESL Canada criteria;
  • Familiarity with relevant computer applications including Excel;
  • Strong cross-cultural communication skills; skilled in initiating and organizing, preparing, and delivering presentations and workshops;
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching, learning and student success through ongoing professional training, subject currency and institutional service.
  • Demonstrated skill in the following areas: organization, collaboration, taking initiative, working independently, communication (written and verbal), interpersonal relations, diplomacy, vision and goal-setting, and time management.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a related field from an appropriately accredited institution. Experience in program development and range of teaching experience in VIU ELL program.
