The Position: Utility Arborist (CUA/ UTT)

Type: Full-time

Reports To: General Foreperson

About Us:

Wright Tree Service, a business unit of Wright Canada Holdings, provides vegetation management, storm restoration, and work planning services to utility companies and their communities across North America.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Trim, prune, and remove trees and branches that pose a risk to power lines, poles, and other utility infrastructure.
  • Conduct regular inspections of areas around power lines to assess potential hazards posed by trees or branches.
  • Work in both urban and rural environments, managing vegetation near overhead and underground utility lines.
  • Operate power tools and equipment such as chainsaws, pole saws, aerial lifts, chipper trucks, stump grinders, and cranes to perform tree trimming and removal.
  • Train and supervise crew members to ensure that safety procedures are followed, especially when working around high-voltage electrical equipment.
  • Maintain records of tree maintenance activities, including tree removal, pruning schedules, and any damage caused by vegetation to utility infrastructure.
  • Track vegetation management progress and document completed work for utility records or regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure work is done in compliance with environmental regulations, minimizing damage to natural habitats and wildlife.
  • Other duties as required.

Experience and Knowledge Expectations:

  • Certified Utility Arborist (CUA or 444B), or eligible to challenge British Columbia's CUA exam, which requires 3,600 field hours—1,800 of which must be in proximity to energized conductors.
  • Basic knowledge of trees, including identification, growth habits and correct arboriculture techniques for trimming, pruning, repairing, maintaining and removing.
  • Valid Class 5 drivers’ license and Current Driver’s Abstract with less than 6 demerits.
  • Applicant must pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
  • Current First Aid with CPR or willingness to obtain.
  • Ability to lift, move and maneuver up to 50 pounds on an infrequent basis and up to 30 pounds on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to all kinds of weather and environmental conditions.
  • Must adhere to the Company’s Drug and Alcohol policy.
