Responsibilities

Primary Job Function

The primary purpose of a CNA is providing daily care, health needs, safety, and comfort to residents under supervision of a Staff Nurse.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Following written/verbal care assignments, including:
    • Assisting with bathing, toileting, hygiene, grooming, nail care, and dressing;
    • Feeding residents, providing water and snacks, and transferring residents as needed;
    • Checking and caring for catheters;
    • Helping residents with turning, positioning, exercising, transferring, and ambulation;
    • Responding promptly to call lights and assistance requests;
    • Maintaining resident rooms and personal belongings;
    • Observing and reporting changes in residents' health or behavior;
    • Offering emotional support and building trust;
    • Maintaining confidentiality and resident rights;
    • Reporting incidents or complaints according to policy.
  • Documenting medical information such as vital signs, intake/output, and other records as required.
  • Adhering to safety, infection control, and cleanliness standards, including:
    • Using protective devices appropriately;
    • Following emergency protocols;
    • Reporting abuse;
    • Following infection control procedures;
    • Cleaning and maintaining equipment and work areas.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED, unless under a student permit.
  • State-certified as a CNA in good standing; temporary work allowed for 120 days if transferring or awaiting certification.
  • Basic computer skills (Excel, Word).
  • Understanding of safe nursing practices per state regulations.
  • Interpersonal skills including:
    • Assisting with procedures within scope;
    • Following instructions and making independent decisions;
    • Dealing tactfully with residents and families;
    • Working well with staff;
    • Prioritizing tasks;
    • Protecting confidential information;
    • Patience, cheerfulness, and professionalism;
    • Adhering to ethical standards;
    • Communicating resident conditions effectively.
