Job Summary

The CNS (Communications/Navigation/Surveillance) Certification Specialist is responsible for providing expert product assessment and testing of safety critical CNS systems. This position has a direct impact on the quality of products and services provided by Engineering to Air Traffic Services; it provides assurance that the tested systems are delivered with suitable levels of integrity and quality for safe operational deployment across NAV CANADA’s operational facilities.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Participate in the planning, organizing, design, and implementation of assigned certification activities for safety critical systems.

  • Ensure system safety is maintained.

  • Validate the systems’ capability to meet functional and performance requirements of air traffic operations.

  • Ensure that configuration management and test activities of systems are performed according to requirements and standards of the TBMS (Technology Business Management System), TCoE (Test Center of Excellence), and the NAV CANADA Safety Management System.

  • Be involved and provide input into new test methodologies, and continual process improvements which will help identify safety risks and critical deficiencies.

  • Advise team leads and management on implications and outcomes of certification testing.

Job Requirements

Education:

  • Graduation from a recognized university with a specialization in computer, electrical, systems engineering, or computer science, or an acceptable combination of education, related experience, and training.

Experience:

  • Intermediate knowledge (minimum 3 years experience) of system testing, test engineering principles and validation of large-scale projects for both software and hardware.

  • Experience interacting with external customers or suppliers.

  • Experience in testing multiple software versions/deployments.

  • Experience conducting cyber vulnerability assessments of safety-critical systems.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the certification process of Air Traffic Control systems.

  • Knowledge of software development and testing processes from preliminary design to formal testing and acceptance.

  • Knowledge of maintenance processes, procedures, and business functions in context of the air navigation business.

  • Knowledge of software requirements management tools, problem tracking tools, configuration management tools and test management tools, such as IBM Jazz and Azure DevOps.

  • Knowledge of safety management processes.

  • Knowledge of industry trends and developments in a rapidly changing environment, with the ability to assess the implications of technological advancements on NAV CANADA CNS (Communications/Navigation/Surveillance) system’s needs.

Abilities:

  • Ability to identify, address and troubleshoot complex problems and to define & implement practical solutions.

  • Ability to develop test plans.

  • Ability to work in a team environment with multiple competing priorities.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to work in an Agile environment.
