Qualifications

Overview

Sperry Rail Service is a leading global provider of Rail Flaw Detection (RFD) services and technologies for railway networks worldwide. Note: THIS IS A HEAVY TRAVEL POSITION. Candidates must be willing and able to travel 3-4 months at a time throughout Canada.

Responsibilities
  • Operate a test vehicle/detector car on and off railroad tracks and in all road conditions.
  • Perform vehicle inspections and equipment set-up.
  • Record and interpret data on computer monitors.
  • Service, maintain, and repair the vehicle and detector carriage, including crawling under the vehicle with limited clearance and kneeling/squatting in awkward positions.
  • Climb steps and/or ladders to enter/exit the vehicle and perform ground examinations of rails with hand test units.
Safety and Working Conditions

Personal protective equipment is required (safety glasses, safety steel-toed boots, hard hats, safety vests). Safety goggles and neoprene gloves may be required when handling vehicle fluids. Training in Road Worker Safety is required annually. All work is field-based and may involve extreme weather conditions.

Essential Functions
  • Operate the detector car and assist crew with measurements and recordings; place and operate test equipment on the rail line; manage fueling or maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Enter and exit the vehicle via ladder or steps, performing numerous steps per day.
  • Identify vehicle and track conditions, test data, and equipment function.
  • Communicate clearly with pilots and crew via verbal and radio/intercom channels; respond to safety rules and obstructions on the rail.
  • Inspect and maintain all components of the vehicle, motor, body, carriage, and generator; perform cleaning and routine maintenance including under-vehicle work as required.
Responsibilities by Area
  • Lower Extremity Maintain awkward postures under the vehicle; maneuver in confined spaces.
  • Locomotion Walk on uneven surfaces; ascend/descend steps up to 300 per day.
  • Upper Extremity Use hand tools and test devices; reach gauges and operate with full arm extension.
  • Back/Neck Postures Manage bending, twisting, and turning within full range of motion.
  • Sitting/Standing Alternate between sitting and standing during tasks.
  • Special Senses Visual and auditory acuity to observe signals, read displays, and respond to alarms.
  • Driving Safe driving practices, DOT regulatory compliance, and customer procedures adherence.
  • Maintenance Proper maintenance procedures; assist with repairs and preventive maintenance; maintain detector car and inventory.
  • Customer Interaction Exercise diplomacy with railroad personnel and document data in the reporting system.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
  • Valid CDL Class A/1 or B/3 with air brake endorsement
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to perform basic mechanical tasks (e.g., tire changes, battery replacement)
  • Ability to lift up to 85 lbs., occasionally over 100 lbs.
  • Ability to squat, kneel, and crawl for extended periods
  • Ability to crawl under an 18-inch clearance
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of 2 years of commercial driving experience
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Bilingual (English/French)
