QUALIFICATIONS and COMPETENCIES

• A valid Nova Scotia Teaching Certificate with a minimum of five (5) years of recent, successful classroom teaching experience in literacy instruction at Grades 3-5.
• Leadership experience with literacy initiatives at the classroom, school, Region, and/or provincial level(s). Please provide examples.
• Excellent leadership, team-building, communication (written, oral, and electronic), and interpersonal skills
• Experience and willingness to work closely with Student Services and other regional teams
• Completion of the Nova Scotia Educational Leadership Cognitive Coaching or Department of Education Literacy Mentoring Module, or equivalent

Literacy Coach Grade 3-5 - NSTU

Overall scope

The Literacy mentor will be responsible for working with classroom teachers in Grades 3-5 in a co-teaching and collaborative role. The successful candidate will have a comprehensive understanding of the Nova Scotia curriculum and the high-level literacy practices associated with strong classroom practice. Modelling of these practices by the mentor is an essential skill for this position. The candidate will be expected to have strong communication skills. As we move forward with 21st-century learning, it is an expectation that this position will be built around using student evidence to inform classroom planning. A candidate with experience scoring Provincial Assessments would be an asset. Please note this is a regional position, and this individual will serve all elementary schools in CBVRCE.

Successful Coaching requires that the Coach have deep understanding, knowledge, and skills in a number of key areas.

• time management strategies to gain the maximum benefits from the Coaching practice
• strategies to interpret and respond to the changing contexts they experience from school to school, from teacher to teacher, and from one time to another
• awareness of and participation in a range of professional learning opportunities
• analyze problems and formulate recommendations that result in improved teacher practice and student achievement
• positive perspective on change and support others in the change process
• strategies for monitoring, assessing, evaluating, and reporting on progress and success of coaching
• use of technology and the ability to integrate digital learning environments within the classroom
• use of data to improve instruction and student achievement
• other duties as assigned by the Coordinator of Literacy
