Cape Breton and Victoria Counties, NS • CA$24 - CA$29 / hour • Entry Level • Contract

The Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education is responsible for the administration of the public school system within the boundaries of Cape Breton and Victoria Counties, supporting approximately 12,000 students in 38 schools.

Minimum required qualifications and documentation

  • Teacher Assistant / Educational Support Diploma or Certificate from a recognized educational institution; or Licensed Practical Nurse
  • Other relevant diplomas, such as Disability Support / Services, Human Services, Residential Care Worker, and Continuing Care Assistant in combination with relevant experience may be considered.
  • Valid Standard First Aid
  • Acceptable Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry Checks
  • Demonstrated ability to perform physical requirements of the positions
  • Reliable, dependable and conscientious
  • Acceptable record of attendance in previous employment
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with and develop a positive rapport with children and youth
  • Awareness of and respect for diverse strengths and needs of children and youth with special needs and exceptionalities
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform basic health, hygiene, and safety requirements for a variety of student needs
  • Exceptional teamwork, communication, conflict management and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and maintain professional demeanor
  • Knowledge and experience with behaviour management strategies for children and youth is an asset
  • Non Violent Crisis Intervention is an asset
  • Proof of supervised field placement (practicum) would be an asset
  • Functional knowledge of assistive technology in supporting student learning would be an asset

Role and responsibilities

Role: The provision of personal care, behaviour management support and/or instructional support to students under the direction of the principal, supervising teacher, and/or school team.

Responsibilities: The responsibilities provide an outline of the major duties Teacher Assistants may assume.

  1. Personal Care
  2. Assist students with feeding, toileting needs, and personal hygiene as required
  3. Administer medication and carry out medical procedures under the direction of the school principal in accordance with policy and health guidelines
  4. Assist students to move about during the school day, including lifting/positioning and supporting as outlined in IPP/therapy plans; accompany students to transportation and community programs
  5. Supervise students to ensure a safe environment
  6. Assist with operation of support equipment
  7. Assist students in dressing and undressing as required
  8. Behaviour Management Support
  9. Promote students’ emotional growth, well-being, independence
  10. Encourage dignity, self-esteem, positive interactions, and participation
  11. Assist in implementing behaviour management plans
  12. Support for Instructional Program
  13. Assist students with programs, strategies, exercises, and materials identified by the teacher
  14. Assist the teacher in preparation of materials
  15. Provide feedback to the supervising teacher on observations
  16. Accompany students to and from community work placements and provide support as needed
  17. Other related duties as assigned
