Job description

The Vancouver Writers Fest connects people to exceptional books, ideas, and dialogue through year-round programming that ignites a passion for words and the world around us. Our activities include our flagship annual literary Festival: one of the largest and most prestigious in North America. Tens of thousands of readers visit the cultural hub of Granville Island and venues around Vancouver to connect with local and international authors during this week-long event. And throughout the year, we offer free and paid special author events, youth education programming with Writers in the Classroom, and an annual Youth Writing Contest.

The Catering Assistant will assist the Catering Manager in providing food services for the staff, Volunteer Lounge, Hospitality Suite, and Quarterdeck during the week of the Vancouver Writers Fest (20-26 October 2025). The Catering Assistant works closely with the Catering Manager, the Concessions/Sunday Food & Beverages coordinator, and the festival team, and reports to the Catering Manager and Managing Director as needed. There are two Catering assistants during the week of festival, one generally working mornings, and one afternoon/evenings.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Meeting with Catering Manager as needed to ensure shared understanding of festival food and beverage needs.
Attending Festival Team meetings as appropriate from date of signing to the festival to ensure strong communication
Reviewing and revising food & beverage guidelines and responsibilities as needed
Serving and clean-up of meals and snacks served at Festival House
Food preparation as directed by Catering Manager
Pick-up and distribution of donations from vendors (involves some light lifting and carrying)
Delivering thank-you-notes and gifts to donors (with support from Festival staff)
Preparing catering as mutually determined throughout Festival Week

Qualifications:

- Should have Food Safe certification
- familiarity with basic kitchen prep tasks and cleaning
- Role involves a moderate amount of moving between various locations on Granville Island; should be able to pull a small utility wagon

$22/hr for about 15 - 20 hrs over the week of 20-26 October 2025
