The Opportunity
Under the supervision of the Director, Transit Services the Transit Operator operates a bus to transport passengers to local destinations in a professional, reliable, safe manner; and provides related information to the public. In addition to the regular duties of a Transit Operator they must be supportive of management policies and directives.
Responsibilities
- Operates a City transit bus in a competent, safe, and courteous manner in a variety of conditions and in accordance with City of Grande Prairie policies and Transit procedures.
- Provides assistance to persons with disabilities for boarding, de-boarding, and securing of passengers.
- Performs Pre and Post Trip inspections and follows established safety procedures and standards.
- Collects fares and provides passengers with service and policy information.
- Monitors passengers' safety when boarding and exiting buses.
- Maintains bus cleanliness by sweeping it out at the end of shift/day
- Reports all operational problems, such as delays and mechanical problems, according to established procedures.
- Monitors passenger behaviour, and refuses service to individuals who may be a threat to the safety of others, or to individuals refusing to pay.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Thorough knowledge of the geographic layout of the City of Grande Prairie.
- Knowledge of and empathy with the transportation needs of persons with disabilities.
- Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with the public.
- Demonstrated ability to participate effectively as a member of a team.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, other professionals in various fields, co-workers, and other City departments.
- Physical ability to perform the assigned duties.
You Bring
- Grade 12 and a minimum of 2 years safe bus driving experience, including direct and relevant experience dealing with the public. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered
- Candidates will be required to obtain a RCMP Criminal Record and a Vulnerable Sector search. Both must be acceptable to the Employer.
- Maintain a valid First Aid Certificate
- A valid Alberta Class 2 Driver's License with Air Brake Endorsement; and
- A current and clear Alberta driver's abstract is required. This must also be acceptable to the Employer.
Hours
Casual Operators are on an as-and-when-needed basis with no guarantee of hours. They are expected to be available for any of the current transit operator's shifts 7 days a week between the hours of 530am to 930pm.
Salary/Wage
Rate of pay is in accordance with the CUPE Collective agreement, Casual Transit Operator, and will be $35.74 per hour
