Job description

Bi-Weekly Hours : hours Bi-weekly / Days (Monday-Friday), with some evenings and weekend work required.

The PEI Department of Social Development and Seniors aims to encourage the development of an innovative, diverse, and inclusive workforce, enabling the organization to achieve its diversity and inclusion goals outlined in the Diversity and Inclusion Strategy 2022 – 2025.

As a delegated child protection social worker, the incumbent is responsible for investigating and assessing a wide range of child protection reports to determine if a child is in need of protection, and providing child protection services in accordance with the Child Protection Act. Additionally, the Senior Child Protection Social Worker (Level 18) will be responsible for mentoring and providing case direction to less experienced Child Protection Social Workers and non-social workers.

Duties will include but are not limited to :

  1. Receiving child protection reports and conducting investigations to determine if a child needs protection as per the Child Protection Act;
  2. Conducting home visits to interview family members and assess living conditions;
  3. Documenting all relevant information and completing required Child Protection Investigation forms;
  4. Conducting joint interviews with police in cases of physical and sexual abuse of children;
  5. Arranging for and attending medical exams related to physical or sexual abuse investigations;
  6. Developing clinical assessments and service plans to ensure children's safety and improve parental functioning, mitigating child safety risks;
  7. Developing and enhancing client resources through collaboration with service providers and the community;
  8. Preparing cases for legal interventions and representing the Director of Child Protection in court;

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Accessing and coordinating community-based resources;
  • Managing caseloads effectively and prioritizing cases;
  • Providing leadership, acting as supervisor in their absence, and offering training and consultation to new staff and students;

Providing after-hours emergency child protection coverage on a rotation basis, and performing other related duties as required.
