Job summary

Riverside Health Care Inc. seeks a Casual Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician for La Verendrye General Hospital’s Laboratory. The role involves blood collection, specimen handling, and assisting in a busy lab environment.

Casual/Part-time position with multiple shifts (days/nights/evenings/weekends). Must hold CSMLS/MLPAO or equivalent, and be able to work independently or as part of a team while maintaining safety standards.

Qualifications

• Certification as an MLT with CSMLS or MLPAO, or equivalent training/experience.
• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• Clerical and computer skills.
• Transportation of Dangerous Goods Course (on the job training provided).
• Dependable, cooperative, neat, versatile, with initiative and reliability.
• Good interpersonal relationships.
• Ability to work under supervision and as part of a team.
• Ability to adapt to new situations and learning experiences.
• Physically capable of performing the essential duties including lifting up to 20 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood specimen procurement, venous and capillary samples.
• Instruct patients on correct specimen collection for sputum, urine and stool.
• Document and handle laboratory specimens according to procedures.
• Prepare coolers for transporting specimens.
• Laboratory filing and data management using a computer.
• Prepare reagents and label them correctly.
• Clean and disinfect lab areas and equipment as required.
• Assist with initial specimen testing and instrument operation under supervision.
• Maintain laboratory inventory and order supplies.
• Assist with requisition preparation and general clerical tasks.
• May perform phlebotomy at off-site locations as needed.
• Adhere to safety regulations and participate in Quality Management.
• Act as preceptor for MLA students and provide training for staff.
