Job description

The City of Saint John is partnering with Drake International to welcome new and diverse talent as temporary labourers (40 hours per week) in the Parks & Recreation Department.

About the Role:

Do you enjoy working outside? Would you like to gain experience working for the city to add to your résumé? Are you a hard-working, reliable team player? If you answered yes to the questions above, please read on! We’re hiring team-oriented, motivated temporary employees to join the Parks & Recreation Department for up to 6 months. Whether you already have the skills, or this is your first application, we’re happy to train you if you’re eager to learn.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Depending on experience and training, you may be assigned to work in:
1. City parks and playgrounds.
2. Mowing and public spaces.
3. Outdoor sports facilities and field maintenance or recreational facilities.

Potential responsibilities include landscaping and lawnmowing, maintaining outdoor facilities, working with parks and gardens, and/or urban forest maintenance.

Qualifications:

1. You come to work every day in all weather, ready to work - and you're willing to work hard (Regular attendance is expected).
2. Able to perform a variety of physical tasks.
3. Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and ability to drive a ½ ton truck.
4. Ability to work with small crews or independently.
5. Applicants must undergo a driver’s abstract review and a criminal background check as part of the hiring process.
6. Must have CSA approved work boots.
7. Experience with lawn maintenance equipment, landscaping equipment, sports field maintenance equipment, or maintenance of flower and shrub beds is an asset.
8. Horticulture or Arborist experience is an asset.

What’s In It For You?

1. A temporary position at $20.54 per hour for up to 6 months.
2. A forty-hour work week (Generally ten-hour days) with 3 days off.
3. On-the-job training as needed – and the experience to show for it when the job finishes.
4. A variety of tasks and shifts.
5. Personal Protective Equipment supplied (Excluding CSA approved work boots).
