Job summary

School District 57 (Prince George) seeks a Casual Indigenous Education Worker to support Indigenous students within the Prince George area. You will assist in understanding the school system and help develop individual education plans with attention to emotional and behavioral needs.

Under supervision, you will collaborate with teachers, administrators, families, and community agencies to promote Indigenous cultural events and student success.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
  • 60 credits with First Nations courses and 30+ credits in youth-focused subjects (child and youth care, psychology, sociology).
  • Two years of experience with Indigenous children/youth.
  • Valid BC driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains liaison with teachers, students, families, and community agencies as an Indigenous student advocate.
  • Supports classroom teachers in meeting educational needs of Indigenous students.
  • Conducts home and community visits.
  • Encourages Indigenous parents to participate in education and access community services.
  • Provides traditional Indigenous guidance to students and families.
  • Assists in developing and implementing interventions for students with challenging behaviors.
  • Provides transportation as needed.
  • Assists in scheduling and prioritizing work with school staff.
  • Assists in evaluating and reporting on individual Indigenous students.
  • Promotes Indigenous cultural events and cross-cultural training.
  • Participates in screening/review meetings and supports Parent Advisory Committees.
