Job Description

The Department of Psychiatry in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a hourly Psychedelic Therapist / Clinical Trial Therapist. This Fixed Term Hourly Casual position is for approximately 3 months (based on grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator.

The Psychedelic Therapist will act as a study therapist for projects involving psychiatric clinical populations and drug interventions (e.g., psychedelic compounds) with psychotherapy. This individual will mainly support a clinical trial exploring the effectiveness of psilocybin for the treatment of alcohol use disorder (AUD), with the opportunity to support additional studies.

Must be able to work flexible hours to accommodate patient schedules and study protocol (i.e., 6-8 hour dosing session followed by a 2 hour psychotherapy session the following day).

Summary of Key Responsibilities
  • Provide psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy according to a protocol-based, structured manual
  • Educate study participants on the investigational compound, including potential side effects, duration of effects, and expectations during drug administration sessions (training provided)
  • Facilitate preparatory work (e.g., up to 8 hrs over 2-3 weeks) with participants to build trust and rapport prior to medication administration
  • Support study participants during drug administration sessions (up to 8 hrs) with a co-monitor
  • Facilitate subsequent therapy sessions at weekly intervals after drug administration according to protocol
  • Maintain accurate and complete patient clinical care documentation and adhere to study protocol at all times
Qualifications / Requirements
  • MSc or PhD in Social Work, Clinical Psychology, Psychology, Counselling, Occupational Therapy, Nursing
  • Must be fully registered by a recognized provincial regulatory body: College of Alberta Psychologists, Alberta College of Social Workers, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, College of Registered Nurses of Alberta, College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta, Alberta College of Occupational Therapists
  • Minimum of 3-5 years working directly with patients in a medical/psychiatric clinic setting; experience with substance use required
  • Experience with providing psychotherapy required; training or experience with Motivational Interviewing/Motivational Enhancement Therapy highly desirable
  • Experience and/or knowledge regarding psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy is advantageous, but training will be provided
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
