Job description

Casual Home Support Workers are trained and expected to work in both the Sanctum and Sanctum 1.5 programs.

  1. Sanctum is a program that provides transition, respite, and palliative care to HIV positive individuals.
  2. Sanctum 1.5 is a transitional care home for pregnant women who are HIV positive, at high risk of contracting HIV or in active substance use. We offer a supportive home for women and facilitate mother‑infant bonding and reduce child apprehensions at birth.

The home support worker provides care and support to clients with or at high risk for HIV. Clients may also be affected by mental illness, addiction, poverty, homelessness or other psychosocial factors. The home support worker will embody a patient‑centered harm reduction care model aimed at creating independence and autonomy while fostering an environment of acceptance and understanding for residents.

This position may require day, evening, night, weekend and shift work. We operate three different shifts 7 days a week – you must be available to work weekends as well as the shift times listed below.

Shift Times
  • Day Shift – 07:30‑16:00
  • Evening Shift – 15:30‑00:00
  • Night Shift – 23:30‑08:00

Wage Range: $19.00 – $23.00

Responsibilities
  • Personal care including assisting with grooming, bathing, personal hygiene, toileting, wound care, nutrition and all other activities associated with daily living.
  • Assist with and support clients with medication adherence.
  • Work with patients on goals and care plans aimed at recovery and management of their illness(s).
  • Build rapport with residents and provide therapeutic counselling.
  • Establish and maintain current, accurate, confidential files for each resident.
  • Assist with transition plans into the community set by the client and care team.
  • Follow medical instructions carefully and consistently.
  • Assist with meal preparation and planning.
  • Household duties such as cleaning and maintenance.
  • Manage any unanticipated events or unstable situations.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of harm reduction & trauma and violence‑informed care.
  • Mental health & addictions.
  • Cultural sensitivity.
  • Clear communication skills, teamwork, and relationship building.
  • Conflict resolution and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong decision‑making in varying situations.
  • Ability to communicate with and maintain an effective working relationship with clients from diverse social, economic, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Degree/diploma or certificate in social work, care aid, addictions, or related field.
  • Must retain active CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Must retain Food Safety and WHMIS certificates.
  • Must retain TLR certificate.
  • Naloxone training is an asset.
