The Parkland School Division has a Casual opening for a High School Musical (Drama) Theatre Assistant position at Spruce Grove Composite High School in Spruce Grove, Alberta, from mid-September 2025 to end of May 2026. This position will remain open until qualified applicant is hired.
Function and Purpose of Position
Will assist teachers with many instructional and non-instructional tasks in the classroom and with other school activities. Will work as members of the school and as members of a student support team.
Will
- Work under the supervision of one teacher or several different teachers
- Work independently with students or in the classroom with the teacher
- Work with a student or a group of students within a class or in a special program
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Perform clerical tasks in the classroom or school
Provides routine and repetitive instructional support. Under the direction of the teacher, will assist the student in acquiring the education and skills necessary for advancement in the educational setting. To reach this objective, will follow an individually prescribed learning program, through team planning and working one-on-one with the student(s). This involves routine recording.
Instructional Support
- Provide assistance in all Technical Theatre aspects of our Musical Theatre Program
- Help with organizing student crew and technical theatre materials in support of the program
- Modify and adapt the program for individual students as directed by the classroom teacher.
Behaviour
- Assist the teacher in maintaining a safe and secure environment for both students and staff
- Deal with student behaviour and assists with classroom discipline.
Student Assistance and Personal Care
- Assist and or participate in exercising, implementing adaptive physical education
- Operate specialized equipment to support instruction for students with physical care needs
Communication and Reporting
- As requested by the teacher, communicate observations regarding curriculum development to the teacher (as gathered in logs, charts, and data sheets).
- Participate in student team conferences when requested by the teacher.
Assist Teacher/Classroom Preparation
- Organize bulletin board display, photocopy material
- Modify and prepare materials for students.
- Ensure equipment and facilities are kept in a clean, safe, orderly manner.
- Assist in marking, testing, and filing of student work.
- Prepare, set up, and dismantle displays, information areas and work areas.
Supervise Students
- Supervise and assist students in preparing for special activities
- Ability to work in a variety of environments and conditions
- Ability to provide active supervision and support with students in typical school related physical activities for full work hours
- Supervise small groups
Ability to work collaboratively with high school aged student(s) and assist with curricular expectations in Fine Arts
Community Living And Vocational Skills
- Travel with student
- Assist students to be integrated into the regular classroom.
- Facilitate the development of social skills.
- Assist students in recreation activities
- Travel with individuals or small groups to community outings
Student Personal Development
- Assist in building the self-esteem and self-confidence of students.
- Encourage students to participate in classroom activities to build social skills.
- Administer first aid as required.
Other Duties
- Other duties as assigned (specification).
- Attending production meetings and rehearsals, as needed
- Supervision and guidance to technical crews (ie props, sets, costumes)
- Planning, sourcing and purchasing technical theatre supplies and materials.
Education And Experience
- Education: Bachelor of Fine Arts or Equivalent
- High School Diploma
ii) Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and First Aid Certificate would be an asset
iii) Courses related to working with students with special needs OR that are specifically related to the above-mentioned duties.
- Experience:
- 1 to 3 years of related experience.

- First Aid Certificate
English as a Second Language, Behaviour Management, Crisis Prevention, Non-violence Crisis Intervention would be an asset
Knowledge of office equipment and Knowledge of computer
- Experience working with Large Groups of Youth (80-100) in an open-minded, creative way that fosters student leadership and empowerment
- Technical Theatre Production Experience
- Technical Theatre Skills and basic Carpentry Skills are an asset
- Strong interpersonal skills. Able to work in close collaborative partnership with Theatre Director
- Tolerence for an atypical classroom environment that is fast-paced, hands on and dynamic
- Ability to work well with school and community groups
- Positive relationship building skills (team player) – capable of building positive relationships with students, parents and staff
- Team player with strong communication skills who understands the importance of flexible programming for students
- Enjoys flexibility in the school day with a focus on student centered learning
- Desire to interact with high school aged students in order to support behavioral, cognitive and emotional engagement
- Contributes to the positive school culture and assists with modeling and correcting behavior which is not respectful of this culture
- Provide specialized support to students and teaching staff
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills are a necessity
- Excellent written and oral skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff
Working one-on-one with low functioning and/or behavioural high school aged student(s)
Hours of Work: This casual position will require input of daily hours from mid-September 2025 to end of May 2026. Hours will average anywhere from 500-600 hours in this time period.
Pay rate: $24.72/hour
