Position: Equipment Operator

Department: Public Works & Environmental Services

Reports to: Superintendent of Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Sidewalk Plow
  2. Sign Maintenance and Traffic Painter
  3. Mower Operator
  4. Grader Operator
  5. Loader Operator
  6. Backhoe Operator
  7. Excavator and Grade-all Operator

Effectively operate as assigned, one of the above pieces of equipment such as a snow plow and wing, a dump truck, a bulldozer, traffic painting equipment and machinery, mowers, etc.

Erect advisory and regulatory traffic signs in the municipal road system in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act and any Municipal By-laws.

Perform general labouring and work activities as required.

Be courteous to the public and show respect for equipment.

Be aware of and follow the Occupational Health and Safety Act and all City policies relative to the Department.

The position will have direct contact with:

Internal: Manager of Outdoor Operations, Road Supervisor, City Staff.

External: General Public.

Education/Specialized Training/Skills:

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
  2. Valid Class G Driver’s Licence and a safe driving record.
  3. Valid DZ Licence with an Air Brake Certificate.
  4. Comprehensive knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  5. Comprehensive knowledge of the Highway Traffic Act Regulations, especially relative to signage and pavement markings.
  6. Proven ability to operate the equipment listed above.
  7. Comprehensive knowledge of the municipal urban, semi-urban and/or rural infrastructure matters.

Work Experience:

A minimum of two (2) years of experience in a municipal public works environment operating equipment is required. Experience in municipal urban, semi-urban and/or rural infrastructure matters including equipment utilized in the road system is necessary.

Decision Making:

The position is responsible for responding to the decisions and directions generated by the Manager of Outdoor Operations and/or the Road Supervisor.

Supervision:

Not Applicable.

Regular outside work a requirement.

Evening, nights and weekend hours are required.
