Job summary

Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) is seeking an Educational Assistant to join a multidisciplinary team providing support for students with self-regulation, social, emotional, physical, and medical needs. The role collaborates with teachers to meet the needs of students in regular and special education classes.

The position involves assisting with hygiene tasks, lifting and repositioning, and following individualized accommodation and support plans.

Qualifications

  • Diploma/credential as an Educational Assistant or related field is required or considered with equivalent experience.
  • Experience supporting individuals with special needs is valued.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks (lifting, repositioning, transfers).
  • Familiarity with BMS/NVCI, ASD or assistive technologies is a plus.
  • Ability to start work immediately and reliably contribute to a team.

Responsibilities

  • Support students with diverse needs (physical, intellectual, behavioural, learning disabilities).
  • Collaborate with teachers to meet needs of students in regular and special education classes.
  • Assist with hygiene tasks including toileting and dressing.
  • Lift and reposition students as trained by therapists.
  • Follow accommodation and support plans for each student.
  • Participate in HWDSB professional development and PD identified by HWDSB.

The Role

As a Member Of a Multidisciplinary Team Of Professionals, You Will Provide a Range Of Supportive Interventions For Students Who Exhibit Self-regulation, Social, Emotional, Physical, And/or Medical Needs. This Could Include, But Is Not Limited To

  • Support students with diverse needs such as physical, intellectual, behavioural, learning disabilities, and/or students with multiple disabilities.
  • Support and collaborate with the teacher to meet the needs of students, primarily those with special in regular and special education classes.
  • Assist on a regular basis with hygiene, which could include support with toileting, diapering, and dressing.
  • Lift and reposition students (as trained by physical/occupational therapists).
  • Follow the guidelines of student accommodation and support plans.
  • Participate in all legislative professional development as well as all other PD identified by HWDSB.

All new hires will be invited to participate in our NEW Educational Assistant onboarding program that includes BMS training, essential skills training, EasyConnect training, and three days of job shadowing.

Position Requirements/Qualifications

To perform the duties of the role, we are looking for the following qualifications, experience and skills:

  • Diploma as an Educational Assistant, Child and Youth Worker, Developmental Services Worker, or Social Service Worker. Equivalent and/or similar volunteer, work, and lived experience will be taken into consideration.
  • Training in one or more of the following areas: Behaviour Management Systems (BMS)/Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), assistive technology, sign language, First Aid and CPR.
  • Cultural and ability sensitivity, related experience supporting individuals with special needs.
  • The ability to perform physical tasks including dressing, feeding, lifting/re-positioning, transfers, toileting, and diapering.
  • The ability to start work immediately.
