The Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB) is seeking Casual American Sign Language Interpreters to provide interpreting and related support for deaf and hard of hearing students across its schools in Ottawa. Interpreters work under the school principal and may tutor or provide note-taking services as needed, collaborating with teachers and staff.

Applicants should have a three-year college diploma in sign language interpreting, a secondary school diploma, and strong communication skills.

Qualifications

  • a three year Community college diploma in sign language interpreting.
  • 1.5 years of related experience.

  • the ability to establish a rapport and work with individuals on a one-to-one basis.

  • Individuals who possess an equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.

Responsibilities

  • providing interpreting and other support services to deaf and/or hard of hearing students;
  • facilitates communication among deaf and/or hard of hearing students and their hearing peers, the classroom teacher and other personnel in the school system;
  • offers tutoring and/or note taking services to deaf and/or hard of hearing students when necessary;
  • participates in team meetings and assists the classroom teacher in fostering positive attitudes toward deafness;
  • and performs other duties, as assigned by the Supervisor.
