Position: Casual Arena Labourer

Department: Community Services and Strategic Partnerships

Division: Buildings, Facilities and Arenas

Reports to: Supervisor of Facilities

Purpose and Scope:

Reporting to the Assistant Manager, Buildings, Facilities and Arenas, the Arena Labourer will perform general maintenance and other operational duties as required for the safe operation of community centres, marinas, and arenas. The duties will include custodial duties, garbage/recycling collection, special event assistance, equipment operations, repairs, and general maintenance.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Complete arena equipment maintenance for such items as ice resurfacers, ice edgers, and furnaces.
  • Maintain building cleanliness and sanitation including lobbies, washrooms, hallways, meeting rooms, dressing rooms, spectator areas, and the outside perimeter of the building.
  • Ensure that a clean and safe work area is maintained including vehicles, equipment, and storage areas.
  • Be responsible for the tools provided by the Employer.
  • Collect garbage and recycling items and dispose of them following Department procedures.
  • Perform general grounds keeping duties as required.
  • Operate and maintain arena equipment safely.
  • Operate ice resurfacer when required.
  • Complete maintenance duties, including grass cutting, weed whipping, garbage pickup, and aquatic weed removal.
  • Assist with arena equipment repairs.
  • Assist with community event setup and teardown.
  • Fill in for crossing guards on an as-needed basis.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to learning and overall professional development.
  • Follow all guidelines for employees and employers as legislated under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable City policies.

Internal: Supervisor of Facilities, Manager of Facilities, coworkers, other City staff.

External: The general public, user groups, and agencies.

Education/Specialized Training/Skills:

  • A minimum of a High School Diploma.
  • A valid Class G Driver’s Licence and a safe driving record in good standing.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) in good standing.
  • A highly developed sense of professionalism, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Demonstrated respect for confidential and sensitive issues.
  • Demonstrated telephone and public relations skills.
  • Proficiently skilled and comfortable with the use of mobile devices and technology.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective problem-solving skills and abilities.

Work Experience:

  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience working in arena or recreational facilities.
  • Related experience with mechanical, carpentry, and plumbing work.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and team skills.
  • Experience with the installation and maintenance of ice, including the operation of arena equipment (ice resurfacer).

Decision Making:

The position has minimal responsibility in decision-making affecting the department.

Supervision:

  • Not Applicable.
  • Regular evening and weekend work is required.
  • This position requires working a variety of shifts, including rotating days and weekends.
  • Physically able to perform the physical demands of this position.

Note: This is a casual position without a set schedule. Shifts will primarily be evenings, weekends, and holidays, and will be scheduled as needed to provide additional coverage.
