Job summary

The Department of Infrastructure of the Government of the Northwest Territories is seeking a skilled carpenter to perform carpentry work per orders and specifications to maintain GNWT buildings and facilities. The role includes inspecting utilidors and carrying out repairs to exterior and interior fixtures, as well as locksmithing duties related to lock systems.

Qualifications

  • Certification as a Journeyman Carpenter.
  • Three (3) years of experience in repairing and renovating buildings and in finishing carpentry.
  • Two (2) years of experience in locksmithing (i.e. Re-keying master lock systems, cutting keys etc.).
  • One (1) year experience in forming concrete.
  • Class 5 Driver's License.

Responsibilities

  • Complete carpentry works in accordance with work orders, plans and specifications to ensure GNWT buildings and works are well maintained.
  • Inspect utilidors and perform repairs/replacements on exterior and interior fixtures.
  • Work with lock systems and locksmithing tasks as required.

Job description

The Department of Infrastructure (INF) provides high quality services to the public and Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) departments, boards and agencies including the planning, design, construction, acquisition, operation and maintenance of public transportation infrastructure and the buildings, works and equipment required for the GNWT to deliver its programs and services. INF makes essential petroleum products available for sale to the public where these products are not provided by the private sector, and promotes the development and increased use of energy efficient technologies. INF also regulates electrical and mechanical safety services and licenses individuals and vehicles operating in the territory.

Reporting to the Maintenance Coordinator, this position is located in Normal Wells and completes carpentry works in accordance with work orders, plans and specifications to ensure GNWT buildings and works are well maintained including inspection of utilidors as well as completes repairs/replacement on exterior and interior fixtures as well as working with lock systems.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of northern building practices;
  • Ability to supervise and train apprentices and casual staff;
  • Ability to use and work with the metric system;
  • Ability to keep accurate records;
  • Ability to read and follow plans and specifications;
  • Ability to use a computer.
Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:
  • Certification as a Journeyman Carpenter;
