POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Resource Team Leader, the Caregiver Coordinator is responsible for coordinating supports for kinship caregivers, traditional caregivers and foster parents to ensure the wellness of children and young people associated with SCFSS. The Caregiver Coordinator contributes to building a caregiver support network which provides culturally safe care for children and young people in our Member Communities and advocates for children and young people in care by enhancing family relationships and wellness through education, mentorship and connecting caregivers to resources. The Caregiver Coordinator develops positive working relationships with our Member Communities, Elders, and other community partners.

As a member of the SCFSS organization, the Caregiver Coordinator is committed to the collective response to the Call to Action through the four Strategic Directions and supports a pathway of change to exercise nłeʔkepmx and syilx inherent rights. In particular, the Community Caregiver Coordinator champions core elements of the strategic goals of ‘Protection to Prevention’.

OVERVIEW OF DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with foster caregivers, kinship caregivers, traditional caregivers, families, Elders, and Member Communities.
  • Coordinate caregiver recruitment, engagement, education, and support activities to strengthen community-based caregiving and family preservation efforts.
  • Support caregivers in understanding and responding to the developmental, emotional, behavioural, cultural, and wellness needs of children and young people in care.
  • Assist caregivers in accessing resources, services, training opportunities, and community supports that promote placement stability and caregiver wellbeing.
  • Provide information, guidance, and mentorship related to parenting, trauma-informed care, mental wellness, self-care, healthy relationships, and child development.
  • Promote and support culturally grounded caregiving practices that strengthen children's connections to family, community, culture, language, and identity.
  • Collaborate with Resource Team staff, social workers, service providers, Elders, and community partners to develop coordinated support plans for children and caregivers.
  • Participate in family meetings, circles, caregiver planning sessions, and community engagement activities that support prevention-focused and family-centred outcomes.
  • Monitor caregiver wellbeing, capacity, and support needs, and facilitate timely referrals and interventions when required.
  • Coordinate caregiver education, workshops, orientations, and learning opportunities to enhance caregiver knowledge, confidence, and capacity.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, data collection, caregiver files, reports, and records in accordance with organizational, Delegated Services, ISC, and MCFD requirements.
  • Support quality assurance, reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives related to caregiver services and outcomes.
  • Ensure confidentiality, privacy, and information management practices comply with applicable legislation, FOIPPA requirements, and organizational policies.
  • Promote a strengths-based, trauma-informed, culturally safe, and prevention-focused approach in all interactions and service delivery activities.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Strong understanding of caregiver support, child and family wellbeing, family preservation, and community-based caregiving approaches.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed, strengths-based, relationship-based, and culturally safe practice approaches.
  • Understanding of the historical and ongoing impacts of colonization, residential schools, child welfare systems, and intergenerational trauma on Indigenous children, families, and communities.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, facilitation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to engage and support caregivers and families through challenging situations while maintaining professionalism, empathy, and objectivity.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, Elders, Member Communities, and external service providers.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple cases, priorities, deadlines, and documentation requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive personal and family information.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, electronic records management systems, and data entry platforms.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a clear Criminal Record Check and Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) Prior Contact Check.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and provide a current driver's abstract.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  • Diploma in Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Human Services, Community Services, Indigenous Studies, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in social services, child and youth care, family support, caregiving support, or a related field.
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience working with Indigenous children, families, communities, or organizations.
  • Experience supporting caregivers, foster families, kinship caregivers, youth, or vulnerable families is considered an asset.
  • Experience facilitating workshops, training sessions, support groups, presentations, or educational programming is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of trauma-informed practice, harm reduction, family preservation, and strengths-based approaches.
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, community organizations, healthcare providers, schools, and support services is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of child welfare, delegated services, caregiver support programs, or Indigenous child and family services is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and professional or personal practice of nłeʔkepmx and syilx traditional values, cultural practices, and protocols is considered an asset.
MINIMUM REQUIRED COMPETENCIES
  • Indigenous Knowledge: Applied understanding of nłeʔkepmx and syilx traditional values, protocols, culture, and language, with sensitivity to the impacts of intergenerational trauma and colonization on Indigenous children, families, and communities.
  • Critical Thinking: Ability to assess situations, identify strengths and needs, evaluate options, and develop practical solutions that support children, caregivers, and families.
  • Caregiver and Family Support: Ability to effectively support, educate, mentor, and empower caregivers using strengths-based and relationship-centred approaches.
  • Communication: Strong verbal, written, facilitation, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills with diverse audiences.
  • Relationship Building: Ability to establish trust and maintain respectful, collaborative relationships with caregivers, families, Elders, communities, and service providers.
  • Motivation and Initiative: Self-motivated, proactive, and committed to continuous learning and improving outcomes for children, families, and caregivers.
  • Time Management: Highly organized with the ability to balance competing priorities, meet deadlines, maintain documentation, and coordinate multiple activities.
  • Conflict Resolution: Ability to de-escalate concerns, facilitate productive conversations, and resolve issues respectfully while maintaining positive working relationships.

Most successful candidates can expect to be placed between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range at the time of hire.

Placement above the midpoint may be considered for candidates who bring significant directly related experience, specialized expertise, and a demonstrated ability to perform all core aspects of the role with minimal orientation or training.

The maximum of the salary range is generally reserved for candidates who closely match or exceed all preferred qualifications, possess extensive relevant experience, demonstrate exceptional competency in the position's key responsibilities, and can make an immediate contribution at a highly proficient level.
