Primary Responsibilities:

PSAC is seeking an exceptional and visionary leader for the role of Director, Equity, Inclusion and Human Rights. This senior position will lead a coordinated, organization-wide approach to oppression prevention, anti-racism, equity, diversity, inclusion, and human rights across PSAC workplaces. Reporting directly to the National President, the Director will be responsible for advancing Human Rights within the PSAC workforce. As a member of the Directors’ Team, they will help shape policy, guide organizational change, and ensure that equity and human rights principles are embedded throughout the union’s work as an employer. The ideal candidate will provide strategic guidance to PSAC leadership, lead cross-organizational initiatives, and foster accountability in this area of work. They will bring a trauma-informed, intersectional lens to their initiatives and help cultivate a workplace culture grounded in equity, social justice, and psychological safety.

What you will bring to the table:
Education/Experience
  • A university degree in Law, Industrial Relations, Social Policy, Public Administration, or a related discipline, combined with at least ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in relevant fields, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership in human rights, anti-oppression, and equity within a unionized, public sector, or social justice-focused environment.
  • A strong track record of developing and implementing organization-wide strategies and programs with measurable impact.
  • Lived experience and demonstrated commitment to trade union values, equity principles, anti-racism, and social justice.
  • Strong management, administrative, and organizational skills.
  • Strong understanding of emerging and complex equity and human rights-related issues
Knowledge
  • Strong knowledge of human rights legislation, labour law, and trauma-informed, anti-oppression practices
  • In-depth understanding of the political, organizational, and operational dynamics of a large national union.
  • Familiarity with the National Standard on Psychological Health and Safety in the workplace.
  • Insight into complex and emerging issues affecting equity, inclusion, and oppression prevention in unionized and public sector environments.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of labour-management strategies, including conflict resolution, systemic barrier reduction, and organizational change.
Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to provide strategic guidance, solve problems, and resolve conflicts in support of PSAC’s commitment to oppression prevention.
  • Proven capacity to lead skilled teams under pressure and advise senior leadership on strategic planning and program evaluation related to human rights and equity.
  • Skilled at developing and communicating broad organizational policies and priorities aligned with equity and social justice.
  • Effective at managing conflict, building trust, and fostering strong union-management partnerships on issues of equity and oppression prevention.
  • Proficiency in a second language at the CEFR level, or a commitment to developing language skills, is considered an asset.
What you need to know:
  • Second language skills as per the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) level indicated above. Federal Government valid SLE results can be used toward this. Preferred candidates may have their second language skills assessed as part of the hiring process.
  • Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
